Not exactly sure.
I think they could expand whatever after-school programs a lot of these schools have in place. In Johnston, ours is called KTC (Kids-Teen Connection), & is primarily staffed by high schoolers. It's open before/after school, non-school days during the year (in-service/etc), as well as summer. Shouldn't be too difficult to keep that going for that 5th weekday if you were to go to a 4-day schedule. It'd be an extra ~$100-150/month for those that need it - not ideal, but not necessarily the end of the world, either. Not suggesting that would work for every district & every student, but it'd help for most.

As others have mentioned, it'd be a lot easier if corporate America adjusted to a 4-day work week, too.
If kids are in school the same amount of hours, how does that add to the daycare bill? Wouldn’t they offset?

No - currently with a 5-day school schedule, most parents only need care on non-school days (in-service days & summer). Some need before/after school care, but that is less expensive than a full day. They don't charge by the hour for daycare/childcare, unless you have your own baby-sitter I guess?

Currently, we don't need any childcare for school year - if they went to a 4-day schedule, we would need childcare for that one day.

ETA - I guess it could be a wash for people who do utilize the before/after school care, IF they no longer need that with the 4-day schedule. They'd basically be swapping the 5 days of before and/or after care for the 1 day of full-day care.

Some schools are starting to offer childcare for the day they are off when they go to a 4 day week. Childcare on the off day is a big hurdle to overcome when districts start talking about going to a four day week.

Be great if that's an option, and I think in a lot of places it could be. There should be a lot of high school aged kids with nothing to do on that off day - be cheap labor & good experience for them, would just need a few adults at each site to supervise.

Some schools are giving them some credit and paying them to come in on that off day.
