For those who have installed a Fathead

I have an I-State Fathead that I'm hoping to put up in my garage. The garage is attached and stays fairly warm in the winter, so I'm not worried about temperature (instructions indicate to hang in climate controlled enviroment).

My question is on the wall texture. Instructions seem pretty clear wall should be smooth. Since 95% of finished walls are textured, I'm hoping someone has tried and had success putting one up on a slightly textured wall.

Anyone or am I out of luck?

You might need to put some tacks in to hold it up a bit since it's a textured wall

Bought an enormous Disney Princess fat head for my daughter for Christmas. Huge I think it was 6 x 4 feet. We hung it up Wednesday night and last night it fell down in front of my 4 year old and she screamed in horror. It's completely ruined now and the ******* thing was almost $100. I'm ******.

The walls are textured and painted (whose aren't, seriously) but I can't believe it wouldn't stick. I wonder if they'll send me another one.

Yeah, mine still hangs in my garage...with the aid of tacks. I used clear ones so they aren't that noticeable from a distance.

Crazy they haven't developed these yet so they can hang on textured walls.

I haven't done it but I've done vinyl on textured surfaces. I don't know what fatheads are made out of but I would guess vinyl. I guess I also don't know what the adhesive is either. Maybe this won't work. I would think if you get a felt squeegee and use a hairdryer lightly, you would be able to set the fathead around the texturing. Again, I don't know how thick these thinks are or what they are made of but with vinyl, a little heat goes a long ways as it will help the decal form around texturing.

I sent them an email and they are replacing the fathead, no questions asked. They just want me to send a picture of it and the wall. I'll hang it up and put some tacks in it this time. The customer service lady was fantastic and they've definitely earned my repeat business with the way they handled it.

Agree with TRE4ISU. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to get the adhesive tackier to mold better to the wall.

One thing to consider is to while the wall down first with rubbing alcohol. This'll remove any oils that may keep the adhesive from grabbing the substrate.

My kids have several on textured walls and we've had no problems other than the end of Anakin's light saber (~3 inches) lets go about once every 6 months.

I'm sure it depends a lot on your texture. The kid's rooms here have a knock down texture so while not smooth it isn't really sharp bumps.

Depending on the texture you could also wet it down and just run a putty knife around the area to just remove the texture in that area.

I put a Fathead up in my basement. It fell down the first night, but we salvaged it. Put it back up with wallpaper paste. Been up for a year, and it looks good. Unless you're planning on moving it around, I'd suggest the wallpaper paste route.

Bought one 2 years ago. It was a custom fathead of a picture of Jack Trice from a night game above the stadium. Cost over $100 because of it being a custom picture. Fell down the second day up, folded over and the back stuck. Once it's stuck together, it's ruined. I was ******* ******. Will never buy another fathead.

Or maybe you could have tried this:

I sent them an email and they are replacing the fathead, no questions asked. They just want me to send a picture of it and the wall. I'll hang it up and put some tacks in it this time. I installed this flathead in my sons room.....bought some whiteboard, taped them together with duck tape on one side, applied the fathead to on the other side, used an exacto knife & utility knife to carefully cut around it, and hung it to the wall with four mirror clips.

Use Gorilla Glue for the saber.

Gorilla glue is awesome, but wouldn't the fact that it's a glue that expands as it dries make it not so great for this application.

It hasn't fallen for a while so I'm probably good either way.

Put on a Plexi Glass and install like a mirror, if you want to upgrade and get rid of easy on drywall and to sell if on plexi glass. Apply in house and after cured, then put up in garage. Exactly what I did with my B Urlacher fathead.

Thx for suggestion. Yeah, my wife suggested something similar but the draw of Fatheads is that they're suppposed to look like they are a part of the wall. Once you mount them to something else and then hang that, you' re just hanging a poster. No biggy. Tacks are workin' fine.

They should considering those things probably cost a fraction of what they charge for them.
