You need a flyover fix? Visit Virginia Beach sometime.

Virginia Beach? Heck, come visit me down in Tulsa. Every morning when I'm driving to work there are usually a couple fighters that fly in to the airport. Really cool to see, not so cool when you leave your window open and are trying to catch some extra sleep on your day off.

Hmmm, trip to Tulsa or trip to Virginia Beach? No-brainer if you ask me.

I think in today's day & age, people would be a bit frightened to see a jumbo jet coming towards them.

They were a bit frightened back then, with Nelson Mandela being in the stadium that day and all - plus it's a huge freakin' jumbo jet.

I'm not saying it'd be appropriate today, I'm just saying that it was sweet.

LOL...Awesome.

Maybe we can get one of the stealth's to fly over out of Whiteman. Seems like the University of Missouri has them on call for many games.

The BEST flyover I've ever seen was at MU in '07.

That sucker was amazing... loud and once it hit the stadium it went straight up. Did I mention that sucker was LOUD?!

The problem with flyovers from the military is that the Squadron and the pilots themselves have to request to do the flyover at any event. ISU in general usually will not go out searching for a specific jet unless they already have ties to a specific squadron (F-16's out of Des Moines for example).

So, for people to say, "Maybe we can get one of the stealth's to fly over out of Whiteman. Seems like the University of Missouri has them on call for many games" is impossible b/c of all the red tape involved with the Pentagon and the military in genera and no school has a military jet on call. Now, if the pilots sign up and go through the proper channels (ISU, their base, the Pentagon, etc...), or a specific person goes through the proper request channels, a flyover will happen.

Another problem with doing a flyover at ISU is that the only place to land after the flyover is Des Moines. So, for the pilots to be able to get back to the game and watch any, they have to take off from Des Moines, do the flyover, land at Des Moines and then drive all the way back to Ames. After all of that, they will probably get back just after half-time. So, they can't take part in the pre-game or really watch most of the game. Ames municipal is too short to land for military jets.

Other than that, wish I could be at the game and GO CLONES!

How is this really any different than any other sporting event that does a flyover? If Mizzou has Stealths doing flyovers at games, those things are coming from an AFB in Kansas, so those pilots certainly aren't getting back in time for the game time. Likewise, seemingly every time I watch a racing event at Daytona IS, the flyover is by jets that flew in from Pensacola, all the way across the state.

I'm not sure I'm understanding why if a pilot does a flyover they have to be involved with gameday activities otherwise.

I'm not sure I'm understanding why if a pilot does a flyover they have to be involved with gameday activities otherwise.

Most of the time the pilots doing the flyover have some affiliation with one of the schools, so they want to be part of the gameday activities, including watching the game. That is half the fun of actually doing the flyover is actually being able to be at the game itself afterward.

Now, as for the Stealths; you are right, they do not get back to the game after the flyover when they land at their base in Missouri (not Kansas) but when the Stealths do a flyover, they are accomplishing 2-3 flyovers that day around the area. They do not take off to accomplish just one flyover.

As for Daytona, those jets do not go back to their home base (Pensacola, etc...) usually. Their are a couple military bases around the Daytona and Cape Canaveral area. So, those pilots can land their and get back to the race pretty easily and since it is a 500 mile race, they will only miss about 100 miles of racing.

At all these flyovers though, there will be a ground crew of pilots to help with the timing, so no matter what, there are some pilots able to take part in the all the game day activities. The pilots actually doing the flyover though also want to take part.

If anybody has any questions on flyovers, PM me and I'll help with anything.
