You have to get passed that he came from Iowa. It makes no difference if he woulda came from Florida St. We make this into too much of a big deal.
Should ISU institute this as a general policy?
Yes.

I.e., any student who was offered a scholarship by ISU but chose instead to accept a scholarship from UofI, and who then decides later that ISU is really the right choice, should be penalized a year of the scholarship just to prove their true allegiance to ISU?

Whereas he who was originally offered by ISU could be playing on the court while on scholarship rather than wasting away on the bench while taking up a scholarship so as to satisfy transfer requirements that could have been avoided in the first place? OK.

I'm sorry, but the thought makes me laugh out loud.

You laugh about scholarships being used for ineligible players? Hrmm. OK.

I guess I'm willing to accept that he very much wants to be a Cyclone and don't think he needs any special tests to "prove" it.

I don't. The kid didn't want to play for Alford anymore, so we're playing second fiddle to him and bending over backwards for him? He wants to stay near family. Whats the best option for him once leaving Iowa? Should he go play for DMACC? No, he wants to play at ISU because its close to home and still Division I.

I know these transfers happen all the time. I know that universities do this same thing all the time, but I also believe that there are extenuating circumstances that have to be looked at in certain cases. Is this kid good enough to warrant the use of a scholarship on him when he isn't even able to play? Not in my opinion. My feeling is that he should earn it and show that he is dedicated to the university, and not only the coach, other players, and the athletic department before being awarded the schollie.

How many players in today's game are "dedicated" to the university he/she attends?? should he be forced to wear "Cy" briefs and wristbands for a year prior to coming to ISU? I trust the coaching staff in their decision-making process....they would not have offered the scholarship if they did not feel he could help.

Everybody makes mistakes. Hes a kid, come'on, give him a break. i think the fact that he actually transfered is test enough of how loyal he is. The only reason he didnt come to ISU in the first place is because of instability in the program following the Eustachy incident.

I think people will be pleasntly surprised by AT when he is finally ready to play.

I trust Gmac's judgement and think that Alex will be a great addition to ISU BB. Someone close to the EIU bb program told a friend of mine that Brunner did not like practicing against Thompson because he was so physical and hard to play against. Is Alex the reason why Brunner was so good?? I doubt it but if we have him on the practice squad for a year, he will going up against our wannabee bigs and hopefully toughen them up. Then next year, he will be one heck of a post player for ISU. Just watching him in the Capital City League this year has shown me that he is by far the best post player we have. He is not afraid to match up against anyone in both his defensive and offensive play and Gmac is only going to hone those skills.

I was not sure about the offering of a scholarship right away either when it happened, but watching him in league play has changed my mind. It is refreshing to see his post play as opposed to the lack of confidence shown in the paint, the pouting and ******** because he isn't getting the ball passed to him at the three point line so he can continue his 1 for 8 three point shooting, and generally lackluster effort on the part of our current bigs. Jessan Grey has also had good post play but we need him to be the 3-4, not our big. I think Alex and Cory Johnson will compliment each other quite well next year.

any others??
Haha. How about we suspend him from his nipples (like in the movie A Man Called Horse) from the scoreboard at Hilton every game? Anyone who is willing to do that would have truly proved his dedication to ISU. There would be no doubt.

I'm glad to hear someone say this. He really can hit the 3-pt shot, take it to the hoop, and is not really a back-to-the-basket kind of player. I think he has the potential to make a great contribution at the 3-4 spot. It's kind of nuts that a guy that tall is such a good 3-pt shooter.

wow..too priceless...

maybe have his feet flattened with a sledgehammer at center court by Johnny Orr?

(Payback with M. Gibson) or force-fed dozens of those little nasty VIESHA cherry pies?

ISU doesn't need Jessan Gray to play the 3. We have Rashon Clark who should play 30-32mpg at the small forward position. The other 8-10mpg can ably be filled by Wesley Johnson & Dunson.

If ISU is going to be a good team next season Gray & Hubalek have to change their attitudes. They need to get a nasty streak and understand if they are going to contribute at ISU or have a chance to play pro ball they need to be post players. They need to screen, play tough post defense and rebound. G-Mac should give them some footage of former Longhorn power forwards Buckman & Boddicker. Both guys where tough in the post, but WITHIN the offense they would occasionally get an open 3.

I don't think he was even offered by Iowa State out of High School, and that is probably why he chose Iowa in the first place.

I have seen alex thompson play many times and I have said this before and i will say it again...He will do just as good as Gray and Hubalek....he will definitely have a better work ethic then Shawn Taggart, out of those 3 i would take either Thompson/Hubalek and then maybe Gray and Taggart

gray and hubalek will never be buckman or boddicker...they were considerably bigger and had big frames, buckman anyway. but you're right they can get that mentality. i think thompson will be a great pickup in the future and will really help our team this season just from practice. with mac's tutilage i would think he can be a great player

Last year he won the Big 10 for Iowa still didnt get anymore playing time. I really dont see him getting much playing time here either.
I haven't been real impressed with him so far. To say that he is better than our other bigs may be somewhat true, but that doesn't say a lot in my book. The other night he literally took at least five or six steps on his way in to the hoop. It got quite a laugh out of everyone in the crowd. I remember him doing this at times at Iowa as well. I hope that Marsden gets tougher on defense and Jiri figures out that he isn't a perimeter option. Go McD!!!
