Let's take it back even further - it's well rumored that if McCarney didn't beat Iowa in 1998 he was gone (let's just leave that as a stated "believed-by-many" opinion and not get into a debate as to whether firing him after 1998 would have been beneficial or detrimental...)

What's there to answer? CG had winning overall and conference records, DM didn't. CG went to a bowl game every season, DM didn't. DM had two meltdown seasons over that time frame, and CG didn't. Basing your argument on a hypothetical situation rather than the actual situation that occured seems rather pointless.

Regarding GT's history, of the 6 coaches that have spanned the last 30 years of Georgia Tech FB, only two have winning records, and one is CG. That isn't exactly stellar recent tradition. It just seems rather harsh to me to fire a head coach who's never had a losing season (and been to a bowl game every year) after six seasons, especially when the prior season was very good. I hope it works out for Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech is one of the schools I attended. While I was there, the football team had two losing seasons and two winning seasons. It is very much a streaky school depending upon recruiting and schedule. We have had no coaches since Bobby Dodd who has stayed for more than 6 years. We have had good men, like Bill Curry and Chan Gailey, but they simply were not great coaches. All of them had a losing season or three. We have a great tradition, but we are no Nebraska, USC, Notre Dame. (Note that no school goes without losing seasons- check the records of today's top 25).
We are an engineering and technical school with tough standards that about 90% of the Georgia athletes can't meet. Under Coach Gailey we had 11 players flunk out in one semester because he expected 19 year old men to behave as grownups. We had a number of transfers because he refuses to change players even when they play lousy. He never won a second half game because he would not make adjustments to the gameplan, even when it failed. And of course, he never beat Georgia, which is a mortal sin. Tech will hire a new coach, have a losing season out of every three, and will challenge for the conference championship about once or twice a decade. That is all we ask- honest program, decent success, good people, graduates.

Yes, or even every 20 years. We got ours in 1990, UGA got theirs in 1980 so we both are due for a run at another one. BTW CU had a really sort of championship with the tie, loss, and 5th down play so we certainly consider our share legit. Thanks for the reply!!

As you can tell, the firing of Chan Gailey doesn't bother me.

However, this fan base is CERTIFIABLE just for the fact that they continue to keep their coach on the hot seat. I mean, about the only thing else this guy can really do is get to a BCS bowl and national championship, but this guy has a .590 winning % overall, is 7-2 against rival #1 and 4-5 against rival #2. +rep for the person who can guess who's being falsely persecuted in this case (I'll identify everything in a later post):

Season: Record Rival #1 Rival #2
1999-00: 6-6 won lost
2000-01: 9-3 won lost
2001-02: 7-5 lost lost
2002-03: 7-6 won lost
2003-04: 9-4 won won
2004-05: 6-5 won lost
2005-06: 8-4 won won
2006-07: 8-5 lost won
2007-08: 9-3 won won

He's got a 69-47 overall record (.590), 7-2 against rival #1, 4-5 against rival #2 (including 3 straight and 4 of the last 5) - and yet he's still on the hot seat...

The only guy I can think of is Terry Bowden @ Clemson. Their rivals are SC (obviously) and Florida St? The Bowden Bowl? I guess I'm not sure, lol.
