Hmm Probably The Station now, when I'm back in town. Became my Favorite senior year. When I turned 21 weekends at Mickey's, Weeknights at Minsky's pizza before they closed (worked across the street at West Ames Hy-vee) Minsky's was definitely the after work hang out 3.50 for a huge 36 oz beer best deal in town. After they closed we all started going to paddy's for awhile could walk in and know 3/4 of the bar. One of the great time of my life, and my gpa sure does show it.

I'm with you about That Place. I probably served you at some time. I worked there from the mid 70's through school. I still keep in touch with my old boss.
I found this site while looking for information on Granddaddy's. I client I was talking to said she saw U-2 there in 1980 for a $3 cover. Claims to have had conversations with all the members.
In dog-town I lived above the Cave-In Lounge (next to the fire station) for a year (1974-75), very popular and fun. The Library Bar was just up the street towards the Towers.
My preference was always That Place though, even when I wasn't working. I went to other downtown bars when there was no good Foosball opposition at That Place.

1.Peoples was my favorite...great FAC with accoustic guitar, good food (the General Jackson rocked) and they got really good bands in there at times.
2.Probably my second favorite was the old L&F...before they moved the couches in. IMO they ruined Cy's and L&F with that remodel.
3.Welch Ave - just a good place to go watch a game, order some food and drink some beer. Now that I'm older, it's by far my favorite (only?) place on Welch.
4.Dean's List - Had a lot of fun there back in the day.
5.Whiskey River - Diverse crowd, good music, good place to play foos or pool.
6.Tazzles (where Sips is now) - $3 cover, free wells or draws from 7-10, nuff said.

My first year in Ames, the place my friends and I hung out was called the Brewery. They had free beer night on Wednesdays, just pay $3 to get in the door and all the beer was free. They had good bands, and it was a good time. They closed after about a year and a half, so then Granddaddy's started having a country night, so that became the new hangout.

I know Granddaddy's burned to the ground, not sure whatever happened to the Brewery. I know in later years it became Hunky Dory's....have no idea what it is now.

It depends on the night of the week, but overall I had the most amazing "nights I will never remember with the friends I will never forget" at People's. Way too many mason jars & Kentucky Fried Mullet on Thursdays...plus my roommate was a door guy so I never had to wait in those lines or pay cover.

I covered door a few times at Cy's roost as a backup for a friend who worked there, but when I went out drinking with friends we would go to Welch Ave. Station. Their Thursday night special of $1 cover and $2 pitchers of beer was hard to beat and my senior year I scheduled my classes around it.
