Well, the time is past. We can now get facebook usernames. Did anyone else jump in right when it opened?

My question as well--Why? What's the point? Is it really that hard to type in someone's name and search? Easier to remember someone's real name than someone's screenname, which is basically what this is doing.

I think it has pros and cons, but you can always choose a new username or a generic one.

What I heard is that the username you pick will be your username FOREVER. Part of the reason I'm not gonna do this.

Yeah, that is true. I think a lot of people may just stick with the number. It really doesn't affect much either way.

Per facebook: "UPDATE on Saturday, June 13: Username selection is now live at Login | Facebook. Remember, choosing a username is optional and will give you a distinct Web address for your profile. It will not change the name that appears on your profile, in search or elsewhere on the site.

From the beginning of Facebook, people have used their real names to share and connect with the people they know. This authenticity helps to create a trusted environment because you know the identity of the people and things on Facebook. The one place, though, where your identity wasn't reflected was in the Web address for your profile or the Facebook Pages you administer. The URL was just a randomly assigned number like "id=592952074." That soon will change."

sounds like the only thing the username does is change the random numbers in your url to something you pick... their example is like this:

the person from facebook who posted this is blaise dipersia, hence the personalization after the www.facebook.com

That makes more sense

I was about to bring up some quote from a loooooooooooong time ago about how you are only allowed to use a real name for your facebook account, etc etc etc, and how this is a complete change from that
