I'm looking to buy an external hard drive to back up my files. Nothing too extreme, just some school stuff, pics, media, etc. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good/cheap hard drive? Looking for something around $100 or cheaper and probably 80-100 GB.

Bought my 120 GB Maxtor getting close to 4 years ago now. Have had zero problems with it, and now that I have it connected to a USB2 drive it's fast to boot.

I have a Seagate that's worked well for me, Think I found it at a Best Buy last July 4 when my laptop nearly died (and, of course, tech support gave me the default answer, "just format everything")

Slickdeals.net

They have deals listed for external hard drives all the time, just do a search and see what comes up.

I have a 250gb Seagate external, works fine. backup my files weekly onto it using mircosoft synctoy.

Same exact thing and it has worked well for me also. A one touch sync, backup option (although limited) and a recovery tool (which I haven't used). I got the compact portable version so I can carry it between work and home. Better than lugging around the laptop.

I have both a Maxtor and a Seagate internal hard drive. I haven't had problems with either but Seagate has a great reputation. You can get a 320gb for around $100. If it was me I would spend $150-$200 and get a terabyte.

The biggest thing I would look for is the software that comes with it. The one-button systems seem like a good idea.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I think I will buy a Maxtor or Seagate brand, it sounds like they are popular and good.
