I have a '99 Taurus that I've run into the ground and is still technically drivable but has too many little things wrong with it to fix. I'm looking to get rid of it with little hassle so I was thinking of donating it to charity or taking it to a salvage yard.

Has anyone donated a car to charity recently in the Des Moines area. I know some of the tax laws for this have changed in Iowa but not sure who to contact for car donations. Any suggestions.

I know Teen Challenge in Colfax takes donated cars. Actually had a speaker recently from there and he stated the economy had really caused a downturn in donated cars.

I donated a vehicle to NPR through the Car Talk vehicle donation program:
Car Talk Vehicle Donation Program

(although I think I used a different website)

It was really really easy. I filled out a form online, sent them the title and they came and got the car (which wasn't drivable) within a week, completely hassle free.

I got a tax statement of a donation of over $1000 in the mail later.
