Many want to change this guy because of his lack of consistency from range. But I think we should trust that the staff saw what They wanted. Besides being a CPOY naturally makes him the focus of their opponent and draws their strongest defender. I’m guessing that no longer being the case will likely increase his percentages as he will not be forcing the issue being surrounded by teammates that are just as talented.
I agree except he’s jumping up a couple of levels and he will see stronger defenders in the Big 12.

Williams got injured, unknown when he will be back (there isn’t a lot of information out there about it).

Anyone criticizing the Nelson signing is completely out of touch with the realities of college basketball. Given that it looked like we didn’t have much of anything left to bring another veteran player in and the injury to the only transfer guard we had coming in, signing Nelson at this stage is a home run.
I don't care what conference he is coming from, if you get awarded Conference Player of the Year that's a huge accomplishment. To my recollection, from all other successful transfers we've had none have come with that recognition or even 1st team all conference

George was a good three point shooter right out of high school actually.

But you missed the point. It’s kinda silly how often fans expect a kid to make a big leap in three point shooting from season to season. They have been shooting non stop since they were kids by the time they reach college. It’s not typical to see kids suddenly become jump shooters late in their college career.
He was talking about body transformation in that example, not shooting.

Looks like his shot has a "hitch" before he lets it go. I assume he does the same thing at the FT line. I doubt that is something you fix. I assume Otz and staff will have to live with it.

That said... love the ability to get to the rim. That will play. I would push him to develop a floater before working on the three. That was the key between Jones and Gilbert.
I was frustrated that TJ said they coached Gilbert to finish at the rim. His body was breaking down, he wasn't getting calls, and he didn't develop a floater or midrange shot. Lipsey needs to develop the same thing instead of throwing his body around at the rim and getting hurt.

That was in reference to the total body makeover Georges did going into his senior year, not his skills enhancement.

Heise was a good three point shooter at UNI. He started slowly last year then his shooting percentage increased towards his norm as he picked it up later in the year. You are talking about something entirely different there.

Of course it can happen. It’s just not normal progression like alot of fans think. Tamin is referenced often because he’s the exception to the rule. And that was after ifis first year of school, not his third. Thats the biggest jumps typically occur. You went back 25 more years do find Tinsley because it’s the exception.

Nelson will be a slasher and tough perimeter defender. That’s why we recruited him. Not because the staff is going to bulk him up into a muscleman three point sniper in the offseason.
We don't know what kind of coaching on his shot he has had. But, if the mechanics have been bad from the beginning, it's difficult to see major changes. But, little things like jumping straight up, squaring up with the basket, etc. can make a shot more consistent. Hoiberg was the poster child for squaring up and being on balance when he shot.

Found this interview with Dominick during his season at UVU. Got a laugh in his answer to the question about cold Utah weather at around 4:30. Good interview, sounds like a pretty mature and grounded kid.

I can definitely see the comparisons to Gilbert. But he look a good 3" taller and finishes stronger in paint and has a decent mid-range shot in highlights. Also see some concern about his 3pt shooting. In looking at his 2023/24 stats at Polk JCC he shot 31.6% from three on 98 attempts. So the concern is warranted, but gives some hope he can hit a high rate of kick-out 3's.

Do you realize you can raise your % 5 pts. By making 1 more shot out of 20. Just shot selection will usually do that..
Yes, I do understand the math. But thanks.

Do most players who jump up to a much tougher level of competition achieve that jump?

Yeah, and Niang has been the butt of jokes and discussion about his uh, unique physique for over a decade now throughout his college and NBA career. It’s a helluva lot easier to achieve that total body makeover when you start from a different place than most all college basketball players.

Does Nelson even need one? He looks good in the highlights I’ve seen.

I like this pick up. Kid can play. Hopefully he can play at this level. If he can defend which it appears he can, this will be the exact type of kid that thrives under TJ.
