28 unofficially; last player to wear it I believe was Darren Davis
30 as well, in honor of the Dirty Thirty IIRC. There isn't a Locker #30 either.

Matt Blair

Man I completely forgot about Matt Blair. Another one would be Keith Krepfle (TE played for PHI). Seneca due to the exposure he brought to the school with his athletic ability added to his play on the field, George Amundson, Luther Blue, Merv Krakau...

There are a lot of guys that were really good for ISU back in the 70's...guys that a lot of the younger fans haven't heard of...Guys like Dexter Green, Mike Stensrud, Tom Boskey, John Crawford, David Archer, Ron McFarland, Tom Randall, etc...

The ISU athletic department is making a mistake by not honoring the program's top players this way. In an inaugural retirement of jerseys they should do Trice and Davis. A few years later they need to do Blair and Amundson.

Good list and I would add Ike Harris and Otto Stowe to the list of great players from the 70's.

There are also two guys who top the what might have been list - Jerry Moses and Chris Boskey. Moses was widely considered the top RB and by many the many the most coveted recruit in the nation his senior year in high school. Boskey was pursued by multiple top 10 programs and was considered to have unlimited potential as a DT. Sadly, serious knee injuries significantly limited the careers of both of these guys at ISU.

CMC and staff have done an outstanding job since arriving to bring in the class that they introduced this year. I am especially encouraged to see some similarities to the recruiting approaches that Majors and Bruce used to sign some of the outstanding players that they did in the 70's. The combination of a clear focus on Midwest and neighboring states combined with true multi-state national focus has proven to work in the past.

Here's a good little story about Chris Boskey...

When I was young back in the day, I was down on the sidelines for a practice. Chris Boskey went down with an apparent injury. The trainers brought out the board to get him off the field. Earl Bruce comes storming onto the field, kicks the board toward the sideline and starts hollering for Boskey to get up and get to the sidelines...Boskey did as he was told lol

Imagine a coach doing that today...all hell would break loose...

Maybe not "retire" a jersey, as in some cases you need over 60 numbers for your team.

However, I could see "hanging" numbers under the press box.

Was it keith simms. Big offensive lineman. Played a ton of years in the nfl. I would say Troy Davis, blair, Seneca, possibly Ennis. It would be more like a rin of honor and not retired jerseys.

I would like to see a wall with pictures of the players in uniform with their numbers and accomplishments at Iowa State. so many who have done well that are forgotten. Dexter Green, Boskey Brothers, Randall, Stensrude, Swartz just to name a few. I wonder what that would do for recruiting.

From the Mike Cox era....Dave Hoppmann, Tom Watkins, Tom Vaughn, Dwight Nichols. And prior to that, Jim Doran and Ed Bock.
