Does anyone know an example of a successful head coach that was a DC?

The post says "successful head coach that was a DC". Stoops and Beamer definitely qualify.
Don't disagree but how many teams are actually hiring defensive guys now? They actually discussed on NFL today a few weeks ago that there may be more talented DC in the NFL than ever because no one wants to hire them as head coaches.

Paul Rhoads. Three bowls games in first four years at IOWA STATE! That's very rare air.

I don't know the answer to this question. Are there any former DC's that come to mind as successful head coaches? Surely there have to be some. offense and defense are very different mindsets. On Defence giving up one big play kills you. On offense making one big play wins. Can a defensive mindset translate to a successful head coach?

Pretty much a swing and a miss on this one.

When a team finishing 9th out of 10 in the conference is going to a bowl game, we need a new way to measure success. Even at Iowa State.

although this year only 6 teams from the conference will play in them. Makes 9 making it last year look a little bit better.

A swing and a miss is, "A DC will be too conservative and never make a successful HC". This was a question and recieved some informative resonses. So why the question? There have been a fair number of posts that thematically say "CPR medels too much with the offense or CPR is the common thread with our offensive malaise and lack of quarterback development". I was curious if Fanatics think this because CPR came through the defensive ranks. Based on the feedback DC to HC transition is not in and of itself a problem. Lots of examples to the contrary were given. To me this is heartening. There is no reason that CPR can't analyze what ISU needs and land an OC that makes a differance next year.

Bottom line is Defense wins championships, National Championships that is. We just need to hire a stud OC and get out of his way. CPR and Wally should focus on Defense and Recruiting, IMO. A great defense is predictable game in and game out. Even the best offenses have a bad night or two...see Baylor last year, OK State vs. ISU 2 years ago etc. We are about 2 stud LB's, 2 stud DE's and 1 Safety away from being a good defense...ie go Juco.

Making bowls playing some of the toughest schedules in college football makes it more impressive. But I'd be interested in what your new way to measure success is.
