Sheer athleticism and talent certainly helps — FloWrestling currently ranks the Trojan senior 12th nationally at 220 — but anything can happen under Des Moines’ bright lights. Mental focus and physical perfection can override a match gone wrong. Reiland has slowly seen the rust come off in recent weeks.
“You can tell he’s making strides and making progress and feels good,” the West coach said. “The talent level’s there — it’s just a matter of him putting it together (for a state title). … Mentally, he’s in the right state right now. As long as we can keep him there for three days, we’re OK.”
No matter what happens this weekend, it’ll be another transitional summer for Francis as he moves onto Ames. He’ll wrestle heavyweight for the Cyclones, which means months of eating, lifting and bulking up in preparation for the Big 12.
