Just found out Discover card now only gives you one 1/4% cashback up to the first $3,000 each year. When did this start? Anyone have suggestions for another card with no annual fee and at least 1% cashback on all purchases with no limits?

I thought it was on the first $1,000 not $3,000?

I thought it was because I had Sam's Club Discover, I did not realize it was all Discover cards. I have had a pretty small cash back amount from Discover forever. I only use it at Sam's. I have a Visa through Charles Schwab that gives 2% cash back on all purchases. They deposit the money into your brokerage account though. You can withdraw it whenever.

It was 1-1/2 years ago that the 1% cashback was changed. It applies after a larger threshold is met.

Also, the cashback bonus credited to the account has to be in increments of $50, not the previous $20 increments. It takes longer to get the $50 credit towards the account. They want you to use gift cards instead.

Discover is accepted at fewer places too.

A MC I use just had it's cashback bonus changed. It was for cashback on car purchases. Now it's only for merchandise. I would think the auto companies stopped paying the rewards.

Another MC card was a Shell 5% cashback card 10 years ago and that was dropped in favor of a 1% for everything.

My ISU MC pays no rewards. The 1%, or whatever it is, goes to ISU instead. I don't know what ISU gets. It's not published.

My AMEX card rewards program just got more expensive per year. The annual fee is now $95 per year.

Do you think that the recent banking legislation in Congress had something to do with all of these changes? You bet it does.

Yep, you are right:

You automatically earn up to 1% Cashback Bonus on all your other purchases. You will earn 1% unlimited Cashback Bonus on purchases after your total annual purchases exceed $3000; purchases that are part of your first $3000 earn .25%. Warehouse purchases (those made at select warehouse clubs, discount stores and their affiliates) earn .25%. We do not include warehouse purchases or 5% category purchases in calculating your total annual purchases.

I've been happy with my Costco AmEx. The fee is the same as paying a yearly membership to Costco and I get cash back.

1% cash back
2% for travel
3% for dining and gas

For Wells Fargo customers, their rewards program is pretty good on their credit/debit cards...1% back on all credit card purchases and 1/4% on all debit card transactions (when you run it as credit).

I also have a Royal Caribbean card that gave me 15,000 points ($150 of RC cash) for signing up and I get 1 point per $1 spent or 2 points per $1 spent with Royal Caribbean.

I am looking into getting a new credit card. I only use one at the moment with Wells Fargo and I am not happy with the "rewards program." I am pretty lost when it comes to picking the right card for me but seeing how I spend about $175 on gas each week I would like to think there is a better credit card out there and getting SOMETHING in return for giving my right arm everytime I fill the tank. Any suggestions?

I just switch over from my Discover card to a Visa Rewards through Veridian CU.

1 point for every dollar spent. Only need around 2500 points to redeem. I got a 7% APR compared to my discover 18%, and no annual fee.

I pretty much use this exclusively and pay off/towards the card each paycheck.

Not true. You can still redeem your cashback bonus in increments of $20 depending on how you are redeeming it. Personally I like the gift card method and regularly get gift cards to lowes, etc. Makes Christmas shopping less expensive.

Yup, and honestly I like it. I'm bummed that I don't get to take advantage of dollars coming into discover from people who are too dumb to control their usage of a credit card, but more than that I'm glad that there are less dumb people to begin with. ... or at least fewer chances for people to be "tricked" into owing credit card companies. Just like casinos and insurance companies, when dealing with credit cards, the house always wins.

Indeed.

"cash back" and "rewards" are ALL a gimmick.

The average consumer spends 20% more per purchase when paying with credit card. And is excited about 1% cash back or some insubstantial "reward".

I just got a GM card. 5% towards a vehicle which I won't likely get for 5 or 6 years. I don't use a credit card much, so for me, that's the best way for me to use any rewards.
