I did a quick search and didn't see anything about this.... any help would be appreciated.

I currently have the new Directv Dish with one receiver (HR-21). I would like to add a receiver in my bedroom and would like to do this myself. Simply put, what would I need to accomplish this?

- I assume some sort of splitter?
- Also, I have an old HR-10... can I utilize this?

Thanks.

Do you have a multiswitch already?

Yes, you can use an HR10, you just will not get the new HD channels.

There should be enough jacks left on the dish. You'll need to run a cable from the dish directly to your new receiver.

Yes you need 2, you may want to think about getting a multiswitch at a common point if you ever even are considering another receiver. Of course they are not powered anymore so you can just install them outside by the dish.

So you can just run 2 cables from the output of the dish to HR10.

If I get a multiswitch can I use the 2 current coax cables and split them to 4?

No, you'll need to run all 4 cables to the multiswitch, and then run 2 cables from the multiswitch to each of your receivers.

edit: with just 2 DVRs (or 4 single tuner receivers) you can do it without a multiswitch, since your dish technically contains a 5x4 multiswitch. If you ever want to add more receivers, though, you'll have to get a 4xX (X being how many tuners you need to service) multiswitch. You can't just "split" satellite like you can cable. It works quite differently than cable.
