Derek Hall of the Denison Monarchs throws a two point conversion pass to Austin Eller for a 43-42 win in overtime against the Harlan Cyclones.

Damn, I went to Harlan. Like to see them win, but never played football when I was in school. Crazy to play this game first of the season. Denison is our big rival. Although it has been SC Heelan lately.

Was listening to 1460 last night, surprised at how many big games were played in week 0.

I picked a great game for my son's first experience with live football, though he didn't watch too much of it, and I had to take him home after the third quarter. One heck of a game. Harlan scored the first 21 and didn't look like they could be stopped. Denison scored their 2nd TD from 20yards out on a fantastic catch down the sideline with less than 5 seconds left in the half. The 3rd quarter was scoreless until the last few minutes when Denison ran a double reverse pass, one of the more well-executed trick plays I've seen, for 50 yards to set up the tieing score. 2 plays later they picked off a pass and took it down to the 13. At this point I had to go home and tried to catch it on the radio. Harlan scored on a hail mary to tie it with basically no time left in the game. They scored first in OT, and appeared to have the stop on a 4th and long, but an unnecessary pass interference call gave Denison a chance. The 2 pt play was from 8 yards out after a false start, and they still went for it. That game had a little bit of everything.
Denison's QB really found a rhythm and looked really good for his first start and made some big plays. The Harlan QB (Osborn) looked fantastic for most of the game, special teams and defense could use some work, but it's easy to see why they were rated so highly. Denison took their best shot square on the jaw, staggered, and found a way to get up off the mat.

On the road...
Born in Schleswig, left at 5, but congrats to the Monarchs! I have a good family friend that is a senior on this team. He was pretty pumped.

Any stats somewhere?

I actually don't remember a whole lot about Dennison. I just remember at one point they were ranked #6 and Harlan was #1 when I was in HS. Good for them though, I always enjoy Harlan losing.

Is Denison suppose to be good this year or is this a big time upset?

I have a strong dislike for Harlan.

IF, these teams both make the playoffs (and Harlan hasn't missed the playoffs for decades) I would put money, even 5-1 odds that Harlan avenges this loss. They never seem to lose to the same team twice in a year.

Also I now have a strong dislike for you.:skeptical:.

I don't know if it is an upset. Harlan is/was rated because of their name/tradition.

All I have to say is Harlan has 4 sophomores who started football for the last 3 years and did not go out. This years freshman class has 16 or 19 players out for football and the junior class that is out for football is in the low 20s. Not counting freshmen I believe Harlan has 63 out for football. A far cry from the 80 or more in the past. There are a few teams that will celebrate this year.
