Is AM1600 the only station that can be picked up in the Cedar Rapids area that broadcasts the Cyclone games. I missed the first part of the game Friday night while trying to find a radio station because they pre-empted ISU for the Anamosa vs. Marion HS football game ...

needless to say I was not happy ...

That was MORE than disappointing! I agree...but it shows where we stand as ISU fans in the Cedar Rapids market.

1650 AM out of Cedar Falls broadcasts the Cyclones (as well as Jim Rome during weekday afternoons)!

agreed. that was just the tip of the iceberg this weekend. between attempting to witness covered in the gazette or on KCRG and getting called a "clown fan" at mass Sunday AM, I'm ready to move west ...

Being the former sports director of a small town radio station in SW Iowa, I have a few thoughts on this.

1 - Prep sports are where you make your money. In a lot of towns, high school football is the station's top seller all year long. So when Iowa State (which is fairly hard to sell locally from what I understand) plays on a Friday, it makes things difficult.

2 - If you're part of a network, you should play the games. It's part of the commitment you make when you sign the contract.

At the end of the day, it is a tough decision for the radio folks to make. I'm sure that no station was happy to have to pass on the Iowa State game, but again, for most stations, preps get the nod over college. That's just the way it goes. If your station played a prep game over Iowa State, I'm sure that it isn't a slap in the face towards the university. It was likely a business decision. Just speaking from my experience.

I listened to the pregame on KWMT-AM 540 while driving around CR in my car. I suspect KWMT cuts their power at dusk and you may not be able to get it at night in CR. Occasionally I can get The Bus 100.3 FM in my car.

Unfortunately, most radios in your home are not able to get either of these two stations.

With my experience in radio as well, you are spot on.

Long story short - Eastern Iowa needs a GOOD STRONG FM channel that has the games on it. The 2 AM stations, 1600 and 1650 just are not strong enough to broadcast the games to those of us in po' dUnk Iowa

I think it's a disgrace that there are relatively heavily populated areas in Iowa where you can't pull in ISU FB and BB games on the radio. You should be able to get those games anywhere in the state. It's pathetic we don't have state-wide radio coverage.

I'm very thankful for the Cyclones Android app, that is the only way I can tune in to the pre-game and postgame! (games on TV of course)

Pollard needs to target FM 96.5 again. They used to broadcast ISU games, cover the entire eastern third of the state. Dropped ISU due to a lack of advertising support several years ago. Hopefully that may have changed.

To tell you the truth it may have gotten worse. At least when I go back it seems like every place is anti Cyclone. I could give examples but I will just end up ranting so I will save you all.

Im almost 100% sure it's gotten worse. I don't think 1600am has one sponsor this year. I don't know when their contract ends but I wouldnt be shocked to see us without any radio affiliates in eastern Iowa in the future.

Yikes...I hope that is not the case but I wouldn't be surprised! That would be a very sad day for ISU athletics!

I couldn't find a station in NW Iowa either heading home.. All HS games. Only missed the first little bit, but still wasn't happy about not finding the game..

To make matters worse, 590 out of Omaha has picked up UofI games. KMA 960 ought to be a strong signal, but, it is not reliable - carrying high school events and even wrestling instead of MBB.

Its no better on the other end of the state either...If you live in Council Bluffs/ omaha good luck if its a night game....I had trouble getting kma to come in while visiting CB....

Why cant the AD at least get one good station in every large market on both ends of the state?

Was going to mention this as well. When Mix 96.5 carried the games we had the best coverage we've ever had. They also really target the daily office crowd and I really doubt they have great listenership in the evenings or on weekends. I'd really like to see ISU approach them again as well, but unfortunately I think our AD is busy with other things at the moment!

I had a friend who worked there at the time they carried ISU and it was the truth: They could not get anyone to advertise for Cyclone games. It wasn't like they just said this is Hawk country and take a hike. I'd like to think the situation would be different now that everyone has seen what it's like to have a ****** affiliate in this area, but I can understand WMT's hesitancy to step up again.
