I think some fans are taking what SEMO was able to do against our defense as a “uh oh, our defense may not be very good this year” without realizing we didn’t really do anything fancy on defense vs SEMO.

We literally just had to go out there, hang out in our base D with a couple modifications here and there, not blitz much (if at all?) and we were going to win that game.

The SEMO game was a tune up for Iowa. We rarely ran in the first half, I don’t think we’ll run much vs iowa. We threw a lot of intermediate, crossing routes, which I think we’ll see a lot of vs iowa. IMO, the SEMO game was for us to break in a new QB/offense (mostly in the first half), make sure things are where we want them to be for iowa, and let our defense practice tackling, because we know what to expect from Iowa’s “offense.”

ISU's ability to tighten up and really not let much happen in the 2nd half was encouraging. There's been plenty of years when ISU got to that first game and couldn't stop the bleeding.

I posted this already but in the 2nd half, every single drive SEMO had ended in a punt except for the final play of the game, and they had 49 yards total.

In the first half they came out doing something that we weren't really expecting and took the defense by surprise a bit. People get angry that adjustments aren't made immediately when that's almost impossible.

Are you trying to win a Sunshine Pumper award? Love the optimism, but you’ve been wrong six times in a row now.
Law of averages is in his favor. He's going to be right one year, so hopefully it is this year

I think the overreaction also comes from some idea that an FCS team doesn't have good enough athletes to make a play.

Turns out they practice and prepare too.

I'm the most curious I've been in a looong time for Saturday's game.

If every ISU fan is being absolutely honest with themself, they know Iowa will not look near as dismal as they did last Saturday. Amazing thing what getting the wrath of your own fans (plus coaching adjustments) for an entire week does for their outlook. I'm more worried about how many times we'll have the ball inside our own 15, & facing that defense after another booming punt. Tall task for an inexperienced quarterback, but hopefully Hunter can remain poised, settle in, and have good success.

There’s also the scenario where the boos continue, and it leads to a QB change or coaching change. I remember Chiefs fans booing Cassel, and Haley, and Pioli. None of them are currently Chiefs.

LaPorta is a good player. So is Bruce. If they find just one more guy (maybe Becht?), they could be OK if we can’t get pressure. We couldn’t get pressure on SEMO, so what makes anyone think we will against Iowa?

I know this is an “injury” thread, but the DL was and is healthy, as far as i know. Need a MASSIVE improvement from week 1 to week 2.
I disagree that we got no pressure. We didn't get the pretty stats but he was forced out of the pocket often.

Not exactly sure.
We have an all-American defensive end who was non-existent against a sun belt team. I know he was doubled all day, but that should leave at least someone unattended. SEMO had 38 pass attempts and their QB had 12 carries. That’s 50 plays and we had zero sacks and just 3 ToL.
We only sent three. They had 6 blocking. That means every DL was basically double teamed.

Bullsh*t. Plenty of teams do it all the time. Our inability or refusal to make defensive adjustments in the first half has cost us games.
I mean it’s a bit overly simplistic to think your game plan isn’t working because of a drive or two. That is unless they score on like back to back possessions er something.

Now last year the game that comes to mind is TTU and I’m in agreement with you that allowing those little hitter plays was a death by a thousand cuts but then again, TTU has done that year in and year out against us and we’ve overcame it.

Maybe I was a bit exaggerated in saying you can’t do it on the fly. My bad on that.
