I don't have a problem with Thomas' game right now. Would like to see fewer pump fakes when he gets the ball outside the arc, and more of his driving floater game. That seems to be his best option. He was pretty good on D last night when he was in. The rest will come - it seems Fred has faith in that.
We weren't watching the same game then last night. I know of at least 3 times when his guy beat him that led to a basket or a foul on someone else coming over to help. Another time his guy beat him and it might've been McKay who came over to help. Since McKay was off of his guy to help Thomas it led to an easy putback layup from McKay's guy. Just because Thomas's guy might not get the baskets does not equate to him playing good defense

Custer should have been redshirted. We didnt need him at all this year and he was coming off being very sick. This was a complete wasted year of elgibility. The Greek needed to be red shirted as well but I can understand why that didn't happen.

Our deep bench has essentially disappeared. We're now down to 7 and a half men, with even Thomas no longer getting the 18-19 minutes he had been getting since the beginning of last season.

The guys who do get the minutes, however, are phenomenal thankfully.

No, we have a very deep bench. Two guys off the bench capable of being the star of the game in Mckay and Nader, plus Thomas. Then Edozie who is completely capable of good minutes, and Custer.

Given Fred hasn't had an opportunity in conference to do it - the games have been far too close. But I really hope we find some spots to get Custer and Edozie some minutes. Whether they deserve them or not. Hard to believe Edozie can't get in there somewhere, particularly against bigger bodies. But God forbid - we're just an injury away from one of those guys being necessary in the rotation.

Pretty sure we are going to need Edozie in some games and definitely come March. Georges improved foot speed and McKay have reduced some foul problems, but we will still have them eventually. Imagine if we do wind up with Kentucky at some point? Going to need his size.

What happens if Morris continues to play well and starts to get some mentions as a possible NBA Draft selection after this season? Will Custer be ready to step into the starting role next year? I don't think Morris to the NBA would be unthinkable. He's tall enough, runs the transition game well and takes care of the ball. If Texas' Isaiah Taylor can be projected as a 1st round pick, I would think that Morris could as well. Morris is every bit as good as Taylor. Curious to see how it plays out.

The deep bench is there, but Fred hasn't had to use it (because the top seven are phenomenal, and the eighth is very capable).

We've also been in a ton of very close games, so I'm not sure why anyone would expect the 9th or 10th option to see much time.

I'm hopeful that we can blow open a couple and get Clayton and Daniel some minutes, because I think both are good enough that they would see quite a bit of time on the average team.

A deep bench is over-rated. You only need to go 7-8 deep on a regular basis. Unless you are Kentucky and can platoon, going too deep doesn't allow players to get into the flow of a game.

Don't worry Custer should get some time on saturday. Besides he's an undersized freshman PG, I doubt there were any illusions on his part that he wouldn't see the floor much this year.

Edozie is a luxury we haven't had in a long time. If the bigs get in foul trouble, there's a proven commodity just waiting to come in and bang in the paint.

Thomas has been inconsistent with his shooting. I haven't seen a team lay off him on D though, so his stats aren't great but he is pulling a defender out to the 3 point line. Every shot he misses seems to bounce off the inside of the rim, so it's not like he's chucking up bricks.

Gonna go ahead and predict Custer gets no time Saturday.

The only possible knock on Monte is his outside shooting. Needs some work in order to stick in the league.

1. Custer does not need to add weight. He weighs more than Monte does.

2. I know its not game experience, but he's going against one of the best PGs in the nation, if not the best, everyday in practice. Morris did the same thing with Kane, we just weren't as deep so Morris was on the court.

3. Custer doesn't lack confidence. He came in and knocked down shots against Drake, and he looked much better that game than he had in any other game.

There aren't many that have as much success as Monte as a true freshman PG. Custer is a better athlete than people give him credit for. If Fred recruited him, he isn't a scrub.

And as for a redshirt, I don't think he should have been redshirted. This isn't football, basketball only has 12 scholarships to deal with. By red shirting him, you are taking a scholarship this year for him not to play and adding another scholarship being taken away during his fifth season. The way Fred is picking up speed and getting in with elite recruits, I don't think we should redshirt anyone at this point, unless an injury were to occur.

Morris isn't going pro after this year but we have Cooke who's a combo guard, Niang who can obviously run the show when needed plus Custer will get better.

If Monte leaves, we probably get a stud transfer who'll be immediately eligible and become conference newcomer of the year.

Does every single thread have to turn into "Matt Thomas is a disappointment?" Give it a rest.

Who knows. The PG class for the '15 draft is not deep at all. D'Angelo Russell really isn't a PG. Neither is Terry Rozier, Delon Wright, Chasson Randle or Jerian Grant. Isaiah Taylor, Ryan Boatright, Aaron Harrison and Juwan Staten are really the only guys in most draft projections that are actually point guards. Taylor and Staten aren't strong outside shooters, either and NBA guys seem to be souring on Aaron Harrison. It doesn't look like Morris will go right now but it didn't look like Embiid would go at this point last year, either. His improved play down the stretch pushed him into the top of the draft. Maybe Morris continues to improve and the increased spotlight on ISU gets him on the mind of NBA scouts. Gotta be ready for anything these days. It's not likely, but not impossible.

In one of Hoiberg's interviews after the Kansas game, he singled out Edozie and Custer for the great work they do on the scout team. Edozie was "Perry Ellis" and Custer was "Frank Mason." Custer having to think and play like great point guards and then do it against Morris, Long, and BDJ each week in practice has got to be helping him improve, especially if Hoiberg is commenting positively on how they are going about it. He is adding so much to his game in addition to his great play-making and shooting abilities.

Did they make him walk around with that dumb, depressed look on his face the whole time?

That Naz Long kid didn't play much as a freshman, I think it has worked out well for him.

As for Thomas, he is still thinking too much. He just needs to catch and shoot. One of these days he will start draining 3s.
