Ask me last year and i would have said what the hell are we thinking...but ESPN 1000 just reported that the Cubs have signed Kerry Wood to a 1 Year $4Million deal..Sounds like he took a little hometown discount from what some of the other teams were offering.

I hope him and Marmol can get things done in the 8th and 9th next year and Dempster will be gone...

I just don't see how you can hire the guy when he can't stay healthy? His prime years were spent in rehabbing his body.

He pitched well last year and I think they are hoping he can continue to play setup man.

Give him a spring training and let him see what he can do next year. After you have invested major dollars in him and he is finally back why would you want to let him go. Plus he is a great leader in the clubhouse.

That's a pretty safe deal considering what pitching has cost other teams lately. If he gets hurt again then you only commited 1 year to him, if he pitches like the old Kerry Wood he's worth every penny of the $4 mil.

Just look at Cordero's 4 year $46 mil contract from Cincy was just insane and he's only 2 years removed from a blowup with Texas. In 2006 he had 11 blown saves to 22 saves which is not a great ratio but just goes to show you how 1 good year can land you a fat contract these days. Reds could have used that money better to get some starting pitching I think.

Wood will be looking for the 3-4 year deal at this time next year if he stays healthy and is effective in 2008. If he's limited to about 70 innings, I think he could be very good.

At that point I fully expect the Cubs to pass on him so he can go win a Cy Young somewhere else.....

Finally some action on the Cubs front. I was hoping we would re-sign hm, when a guy is as loyal to one team as Kerry Wood has been to the Cubs, he deserves one last shot.

As a Sox fan, I was really hoping we'd look at him as a RP. 4 million is a little pricey, but one year doesn't hurt. The Cubs have the money too.

Good signing.

Hasn't it been the other way around?

My bad, ya it has been. But you can also say that Kerry has been loyal when he turned down 2 and 3 year deals with other teams to stay with the Cubs.

Kerry loves Chicago - I think that's well documented. This is a great fit for both sides - provided Wood can stay healthy.

I still think both he and the club would love to see him get strength and stamina back, and move back into the rotation at some point. Will it happen? Who knows but it's long money right now.

And I've heard plenty that says he's great in the clubhouse. A couple people in the know down at the I-Cubs have told me that he's terrific when he's here. Takes the other players out for dinner, stuff like that which you don't often see with annointed big leaguers.

I've heard that too. And the opposite for Mark Prior.

See the definition of insanity. IMO, the Cubs employ it to perfection.

I agree with that. However, I can totally see the Cubs expecting him to do more this year with a healthy year under his belt. If not, good for them - seems like a decent situation. If so, well, more insanity.

The Cubs put basically all their eggs in the Prior/Wood basket more times than one and got burned almost the same number of times.

Anyone who is a fan of the cowboys has no merit in this discussion...
