There's plenty out there that have played country music i.e. using instruments and arrangements that stick to traditional sound and continue to do so but don't have to do so by 'being' country.

The 'being' something spans all genres and is annoying AF how people can't listen to something that's not just basically karaoke for fans to sing along to.

Yeah, cant say I disagree. Garth is the original bro country, but its so much different than the **** out there now
There was variety in his songs as well. You could recognize it was Garth, but "The River" and "Ain't Goin' Down" sound nothing alike musically (just using two examples there). BTW - another artist with more showmanship than vocal chops. ;)

Ive seen a lot of big time country artists in concert. Nobody has come close to Garth from a performance standpoint.

If you ever watched the movie "Pure Country", that seems to be the theme. It doesn't have to be about the production, it can actually be about the music.

There is good county out there, its just not played on the radio. It was all down hill after Taylor Swift hit it big and ruined what is played on the radio.

Love that movie. Although I have seen both George and Garth in concert and both are 2 of the best shows I have ever seen for entirely difference reasons. George will just stand up there and sing and his set list and band is good enough that is all you need to feel you got your money's worth. Garth is high energy and knows how to work a crowd but he too isn't going to go overboard with videos and pyrotechnics in the background he just goes out there and sings his butt off. I don't know how he can do 2 shows a night and not be tired as hell afterward. We went to the earlier show when he was in DM and he was soaked in sweat by the time he was done and he still had another full show to do probably 90 minutes later once they cleared the arena.

That's where I fell in love with King George. Dude can't act for crap, but oh....that voice, those songs...

Me too - both at Hilton. Both great concerts. Amazing that Strait has so many #1 hits that he could only fit in about 1/4 of them...

TIL. I wondered where they had gone.

They (the Band Perry) also got dropped from their label after "Live Forever" fizzled short of the top 20 a few years back. They were experimenting with their sound and have tried to release a few songs independently, but nothing has caught on. I believe they are still without a label and promotion.

Garth is an example of pushing the limits. It isn’t traditional country but it isn’t Bro country either. To me Bro country and the problem now is it is a corporate feel. Many aren’t artists they are trying to sell music.

Tyler Childers is so damn good. I went to Hinterland mainly because of Sturgill and since then, I've listened to Sturgill here and there and Tyler pretty consistently. So gritty and such a great voice. Speaking of a great country voice, anybody into Colter Wall? Haven't listened to him a ton yet so I'm not totally sold but I dig him a little bit. Weird watching him perform because it doesn't seem like that voice should come from that dude.

You know what's up!!!! I saw Colter Wall and Childers in the same week right before Christmas. Two of my favorite shows since I moved to TX...Bingham Solo Acoustic and Ben Nichols (Lucero) solo Acoustic were the best though. We have also seen Stoney Larue, Whiskey Myers, Randy Rogers, Turnpike, Shakey, Casey Donahew, Charlie Robison, Lucero and Cross Canadian....all in 18 months and within 45 minutes of my house. Best part about the move.

My definition of "bro country": if you can play five songs by five different artists and not be able to differentiate beat, tune, vocals and lyrics between them, it just might be bro country. :D

First few songs from each of those three, I liked. When each new song sounded suspiciously like their previous songs, I got bored with them. :)

Amarillo Sky and Taylor's early stuff weren't too bad. Luke Bryan........that one about is brother is ok but I swear the rest of them are all some combo of a pickup, dirt road, beer, party, and "girl"/"baby". Blake Shelton has drifted into that for me as well.

Here's a song that just popped in my head while thinking about the topics in this thread. This song is sure is relevant today as some of these country artists start to get older. I grew up listening to the Oak Ridge Boys and still enjoy them today even. Even my soon to be 5 year old daughter likes some of their songs I play in the car once in awhile so I may have to take her to one of their shows next time they are in the area as they are all in their 70's now and makes me wonder just how many more years they will tour. Hopefully they are in town during a Christmas tour as I've seen them in concert a few times and the Christmas show is neat because it's 1/2 show of their big hits then the 2nd half is all Christmas stuff. There isn't really a modern day version of what they do, Little Big Town is probably the closest thing I guess?

Alabama was another group that when they originally did their farewell in Ames I was bummed I missed out but they are back touring again and got to see them at the state fair a couple years ago. That's another group that doesn't go out there and put on a big lights and pyrotechnics show, they just get on stage and perform good music while still having some energy to their show.
