I'm not a connoisseur or anything, but I buy a handle of Makers every month or so and it is usually $10 cheaper than anywhere else. Good enough for my old fashions.

Fun Fact: In the state of Iowa neither Sam's or Costco can deny you entry to their stores if you are buying alcohol.

Not a member of either, but this thread has raised a question for me.

What's the collection of scotch and bourbon look like at Costco, and how are the prices?

I took Kirkland Bourbon with me on a camping trip one year and it didn't dissappoint. Can't recall the price though.

So we are in Ankeny after relocating from Kansas City, and you will pry my Costco membership from my cold, dead hands. My in-laws have a Sam's Club membership, but there's still some stuff that Costco has that we just can't get at Sam's Club, like big blocks of paneer for when we are making Indian food, and the Kirkland wines and liquor that we used to keep the bar stocked. I don't mind doing the drive once a month-ish, as I usually just combine trips with my other WDM errands like Trader Joe's. Also, I value that they treat the employees well.

I go to Costco quite often just for regular food. They have good prices for lean protein type of stuff like skinless chicken tenders, mahi mahi etc.

I went to Sam's once with some family and it seemed similar but I didn't think the selection of food was the same for what I'm looking for but that was a small sample size.

Seems like most employees I've seen at Costco have been there for as long as I can remember so it may be a good place to work...some days I just want to be a cart gatherer.

The collection of Scotch and Bourbon at Costco is location dependent, but they typically have VERY good prices here in MN compared to the local liquor stores because they buy in much larger quantities. I drink a lot of Bourbon and Scotch, and Costco is one of my favorite places to hunt for good prices. I typically have the Total Wine website open while I'm shopping to verify pricing. Costco has a much better selection of whiskey and scotch than Sam's.

That's been a rumor for 10 years now lol. Was supposed to happen by fleet farm and then that fell through. Then costco was going to Altoona instead and that never happened.

To the OP
We like costco better but its not worth the hassle and use Sams Club. It also depends on what products you buy. If they aren't fresh products, costco can ship to your house for free.
Also suppose to build one off Hwy 141 in Grimes

I'm a Sam's Club member through my daughter, who works at Walmart, so I got a free membership. The only times I ever go there any more are to get TP. I do, however, like their nuts in the huge jars and beef jerky in big bags. Paper plates too. But that's about the only things I buy there. I did get a set of cooking knives there one time when they had a live demonstration going on. I still use those knives.

Before I retired, I used to go there every other week or so to get a case of the 24 ounce bottles of diet Pepsi. I worked second shift and I used to take two of them to work every day. One would last me until supper time and then I'd have the other after supper.

Never even seen a Costco.

Costco does not own any land in Polk County according to the Assessors website. The WDM store shows up correctly in Dallas County owned as "COSTCO WHOLESALE CORPORATION". No results in Polk County search

Current Ankeny projects:

Just a guess, but I would expect that if Costco were building it Ankeny it would hit local media well before the assessor or Ankeny development web page. Anyway, rumors like that have been out there for a long time - though usually they were about Altoona, not Ankeny - and nothing ever comes of them. That big open space on the northeast corner of the 36th St interchange with I-35 would be perfect, though...

I live in Ankeny and we've had a Costco membership since around the time it opened. I've considered swiching to Sam's but considering we only go once a month and stock up, it's not a burden. I'm disappointed they ditched their take-and-bake pizzas, though.

Costco is better, but Sam's is still pretty ok. Costco will have more options in general, so you'll find some limitations in Sam's compared to what you're used to seeing. We had a Costco membership the first year it opened, but then gas prices jumped to $3.99 a gallon and we couldn't justify toodling down to WDSM for a dozen muffins every so often. We decided to get the Sam's membership (since it was actually in town) and see how it worked. Took a while to figure out what to buy to actually feel like we got our money's worth (not everything is a 'deal') out of the membership. I like Sam's but if a Costco opened up nearby (or we moved to where one existed), I'd go back to them in a heartbeat.
