I think the best recent comparison (and potential hope for optimism) is 2016 Notre Dame. Great offense, poor defense that crashes in the regular season only to have a surprising NCAA tourney.

Not saying ISU will do the same, but at least there is precedent.

Thank you for posting this. Looking over the end of their season...

They had those two terrible games against FSU and Miami.

Turned around and had good games against NCSU and Duke.

Had another clunker before going on a run in the NCAA tournament.

I will admit I do not know that much about Notre Dame basketball, but do you know why they became so violently inconsistent the last month of the season like that?

Injury -- good player(s) phasing in and out? "Just had some bad nights?" Or were there major issues with team cohesion like we seem to be having right now?

We certainly have the talent to do something like this. It was not that long ago we housed Kansas State in Manhattan and played a good game against a good Oklahoma team that will make the tournament in Hilton. We did not play great against TCU or Baylor in February, no, but we played at least passable games against them, even if we eventually lost close ones.

If this team had consistently played like it did in January, it could be a Top 10 team and looking at a #3 or #2 seed right now. That might be a bit much to ask -- I am more stating the pieces are there if we somehow miraculously lock it down, circle up, and play like we can.
