Honest opinion.

Respectfully I think you are being too hard on above poster. Some people are more casual fans, or not fans of sports at all. Disparaging someone because he doesn't think like you is pubescent. Sorry, just MO.

He's on a message board complaining about not knowing who the players are. Take 5 minutes and learn their names, it's really not that hard.

Or watch/listen to a game and you'll learn their names pretty fast.

Hoiberg's four good years gave us...

-- 4/4 made the NCAA tournament
-- 2/4 won the Big 12 tournament
-- one Sweet Sixteen and two Ro32 appearances
-- never led against UConn in the Sweet Sixteen game, and would have been underdogs against Michigan State, Florida, and Kentucky (all ranked ahead of us on BT and KenPom) for the natty
-- one huge embarrassing failure in the first round

Those two Larry years gave us..

-- 2/2 made the NCAA tournament
-- 1/2 won the Big 12 tournament
-- 2/2 won the Big 12 regular season
-- one Elite Eight and one embarrassing failure in the first round
-- had a lead late against Michigan State to go to the Final Four (and then blew it) and would have been heavy favorites over Florida and Wisconsin... a very direct path to the natty if they downed Sparty

I mean, if you think an extra Ro32 berth or two is really that great, then be my guest, but I would rather have those banners in Hilton saying we won the Big 12 regular season title (twice). I would also prefer a team that really did have its road to a national title paved with gold after Michigan State.

I don't think you really get the point, though, which is why you go on about "the Hoiberg era was great, deal with it" when literally nobody on here would not say that was a great era for ISU.

The point is it was not a singularly, uniquely great era for the program. We've had short stretches of 2-4 years of success at that level before, and Fizer/Tinsley is the best example of that.

We've NEVER seen anything like what Campbell is doing now -- even during the Majors and Bruce eras back in the 1970s of yore. Campbell leaving for an NFL job would be 10x as devastating to Iowa State as was Hoiberg leaving for the Bulls, but I doubt Campbell leaving would be as upsetting for the Hoiberg fanboys.

The last part of your last sentence is 100% false. The Hoiberg page was turned a long time ago.

Yes, the 2000 season was the best season we've ever experienced. 2001 was a blast too, but the way it flamed out (1st rd B12, 1st rd NCAA aka most of the fun) carries a lot of weight. If we're getting into weird specifics (blowing a lead being better than never leading), the Hampton loss was/is far more embarrassing than UAB. We still have to see that coach spreading his legs every March.

I just think it's weird that you always try to minimize Hoiberg's accomplishments here. How can I guy that prides himself on using data blatantly use "a couple of times"? Seems like you have an agenda.

And then you have sigmapolis weird narrative that the Hoiberg era was actually similar to......Wayne Morgan...

Way to miss the point. Hoiberg made the tournament. But so did Johnny, Floyd, Larry, and... Wayne. The loveable clown Wayne Morgan may we all call him when we need satellite dish service.

The point? Making the tournament is more the rule than the exception for successful Iowa State coaches. Even relatively unsuccessful ones (Prohm and Morgan) made the NCAA tournament on their own once.

If you want to sunshine pump the (very good!) Hoiberg era as the "best ever," then you are going to have to come up with some accomplishments that truly stand out from the rest of program history.

The Hoiberg era was excellent, probably the second-best in school history, but nothing in it compared to the heights achieved by the Fizer-Tinsley team in winning the Big 12 regular season twice and having a path to a national title to the point they probably should have been able to do it that year.

all because he treats efficiency ratings as the only way to measure the success of a season. And a weird devotion to minimizing the success of Hoiberg.

So those Big 12 title banners hanging in Hilton that Larry, Marcus, and Jamaal brought us are "just efficiency stats?" You might want to try again. I use the efficiency stats for context, but I am well aware of the discreet W/L accomplishments of teams, too, and the good Larry teams were the best there.

The fanbase is over Hoiberg leaving. I'm not sure what sigmapolis is talking about with the Jurassic Park metaphor. That's about as off base as I've seen him since he said Hoiberg went to "a couple tourneys". So much for data guiding his narratives.

Somebody starts a thread saying "Prohm resurfaces/is alive" and somehow like the next three posts could be summarized as "**** that guy." Yeah, we're totally over Hoiberg leaving, totally.

The lady doth protest too much.

I minimize the Hoiberg era only in comparison to the hyperbolic "the best ever!" posts. Taking a little bit of air out of the Hoiberg legend to put his tenure where it should be -- the second-best era of Iowa State basketball, still an incredibly great time, obviously -- is not somehow unfair or unrealistic.

I am a Hoiberg fanboy. I grew up watching him play, and I have great memories of him as a player and coach. I cheered for him when he went to Chicago. I'm cheering for him at Nebraska. I was a Prohm fan until this past season made clear he was completely in over his head. I am an ISU fanboy first and foremost. Hating on Prohm has almost nothing to do with Hoiberg and everything to do with going 2-22 and losing to teams like FAMU and Milwaukee at Hilton Coliseum. So yeah, **** that guy for burying a proud program when he was gifted a massive head start.

I rarely ever hear anything about Hoiberg when talking to ISU fans I know in real life. It's been a long time. I don't know who you're talking to that you think a "significant" portion of the fanbase is a part of your Jurassic Park reference.

I would normally agree with you, but I think what makes this different is the poster was using that lack of knowledge to criticize Prohm. I think in that case Curt’s criticism is a lot more warranted

Cool. And I agree with you both. I just think we are into ISU sports, and maybe sports in general more than this guy is/was. Have a great day!

Prohm took our money and ruined our basketball program... "but he's a good guy". Fred elevated our bball program to the highest its ever been and left a stacked team to pursue his dream job... "but he's selfish"

Prohm was hardly a complete failure here. NCAA tournament bids 3 of his 6 seasons, 23+ wins those 3 as well and won 2 Big 12 tournament championships. Yeah the down years were aweful and there is no excusing the horrible season last year either. But the guy is not a horrible coach, He still owns a 201-124 (.618) record as a head coach, was named Ohio Valley Conference coach of the year twice and didn't have a losing season until his 7th year as a head coach. On top of that he has sent several players to the NBA at both stops.

I have a feeling he will eventually land on his feet and be successful somewhere else just like Greg McDermott did and GMAC had a lot worse run at ISU than Steve did and GMAC had plenty of success at UNI before ISU hired him too. There are some guys that this job is just not a great fit for but doesn't mean they are horrible coaches. I'd also temper the expectations that TJ is going to be the savior too. I sure hope he has success here as he's a great guy as well but his head coaching experience is not all that different than when Prohm started. TJ had 3 winning seasons at a small school at SDS and a COY award then had 2 so-so seasons at UNLV before we hired him so it's not a given he is just going to hit the ground running here and be a huge success either.

My 8th grade B team coach could've got 3 tourney bids with those rosters

Prohm didn't "take" our money...it was his! He was offered an extension and signed it! Barring any illegal activities on his part...at that point that money was his! Look...the program tanked for sure under his watch but he didn't do anything not to earn the money that he was promised! College sports would be a lot more filthy if pay was based purely on performance or wins by a coaching staff!

I would argue college sports are more filthy because salaries are not based on performance/wins. We just spent millions to get rid of a guy who did a ****** job and not working here anymore and spent additional millions to steal a guy from a different university.

I'd love to get a multi-year contract, be terrible at my job, and then get paid to not come back.

That is up to the market conditions! I remember reading a comment of Charles Barkley in reference to a huge contract extension that Shawn Kemp had signed in the NBA and then largely failed to live up to the expectations/dollars in the contract. He basically advised Shawn Kemp not to worry about it because a contract extension is offered/paid to a person for what they already achieved! And to some extent that is correct. Money already earned or it wouldn't be offered. However, in the case of Prohm, he was offered an extension, signed it and STILL tried to build a winning program in Ames. It obviously didn't work out but it had nothing to do with Prohm failing to live up to the expectations of his contract.
