I remember reading his quote near the time he said it. It was less cocky and more like, "You will have a great season next year, but I hope you go 11-1." I am pretty sure he didn't say they ARE GOING to go 11-1.

Re: Swagger is not bragging, it's confidence.

Too often we have thought that we MIGHT or that we SHOULD win. We did not often go into a game CONFIDENT that we will win.

Another aspect is that when we don't win, I'm confident that Gene isn't going to shoulder all of the blame and say that he will try harder next time. A great CEO motivates but, more importantly, he/she makes people responsible. I loved Coach Mac for his drive and his willingness to protect his team but he needed to take the last step and make people responsible for results. Coach Mac was willing to take all of the consequences to protect egos and fledgling careers. That was an overwhelming task when his coaches and players couldn't deliver. I don't think Gene is going to do that. It will be Show or Go. The koolaid just fermented.

It's hard to make others take responsibility, and be taken seriously, when you don't take responsibility yourself. And I am not sure what consequences you are talking about, he didn't have any until JP got here.

Gene will make people be accountable, because he is secure enough in himself, and his abilities.

Quotes and stories about recruits are great, but I'm to the point where I'm not making any kind of opinion until I see action on the field. Every year people say we're gonna be awesome, we're terrible....every year people say it will be a down year, we tie for the conference title.

This is a silly discussion in my opinion. It doesn't mater what people say it's what they do on the field that counts. swagger doesn'ty mean s*** if you can't back it up.

Swagger is not something won or lost on the field, it is an attitude that a team knows it can win a game, not think it might, know it can. This year there are not a lot of teams on the schedule to build much swagger on, but I sure never want to see ISU pissing around with very average teams like UNI and Toledo again. I never liked Hayden, but he sure knew how to get inferior teams out of the game in a hurry. His teams had swagger.

Although I agree with most of which you say, one could argue we've had decent swagger in the past. McCarney built his teams up expecting to win....obviously we were let down a lot. Attitude can do a lot, but making plays is the bottom line.

I love to see the discussion of Bob Stoops on this thread because I believe that Chizik is our Bob Stoops.

Stoops took over a "once storied" OU program. It was not the Barry Switzer OU program nor was it the current OU program...they were down when Stoops came to Norman. He came in with a WINNING ATTITUDE (what some here are calling "swagger") after being the DC for Spurrier at Florida.

I believe Chizik has this WINNING ATTITUDE. This is something you carry with you all the time...not just on gamedays. It affects how you think, how you act, how you speak, how you deal with people, how you plan, how you prepare, how you practice, and ultimately how you play. A guy like Chizik understands that winning is something you have to do EVERY DAY in everything you undertake.

[New scene - Elaine at her job interview at Doubleday with Mrs. Landis.]

LANDIS: Of course, Jackie O. was a great lady. Those are going to be some tough shoes to fill. Everyone loved her. She had such...grace.

ELAINE (gushing): Yes! Grace!

LANDIS: Not many people have grace.

ELAINE: Well, you know, grace is a tough one. I like to think I have a little grace...not as much as Jackie -

LANDIS: You can't have "a little grace." You either have grace, or you...don't.

ELAINE: O.K., fine, I have...no grace.

LANDIS: And you can't acquire grace.

ELAINE: Well, I have no intention of "getting" grace.

LANDIS: Grace isn't something you can pick up at the market.

ELAINE (fed up): Alright, alright, look - I don't have grace, I don't want grace...I don't even say grace, O.K.?

LANDIS: Thank you for coming in.

ELAINE: Yeah, yeah, right.

LANDIS: We'll make our choice in a few days, and we'll let you know.

ELAINE (stands up): I have no chance, do I?

LANDIS: No. (They shake hands.)
