The vast majority of low-price Chinese restaurants get their pre-made food from the same two or three suppliers and just warm it up in a wok or deep fryer. One of the big suppliers has a dragon on the side of the truck, I saw a fax order form for another while eating at one restaurant. I've seen more than one of these places with a "Best in Town" plaque on the side of the wall.

There are a few homemade Asian choices in Des Moines. The vendors at the farmers market have crab rangoon with real crab inside. Another Thai restauranteur raises her own vegetables to serve her patrons. The Vietnamese neighborhood places have the biggest menus and the most choices.

I'd say I've noticed the most at Cocost, CHC, and the Scallion. Those seem to have the most authentic options.

Nitpick, but Scallion is Korean food, not Chinese. It's definitely authentic though, and delicious.

I can't believe I've never heard of CHC, but it's next on my list of places to try.

I have to put my vote in for the Mandarin. You can't beat their lunch deal. And their (spicy) shredded beef is awesome. I haven't tried CHC yet, but I'm going to soon.

Just heard this place is closing. Anyone know if that's true?? Unfortunate if it is, CHC was one of my absolute favorite spots to eat when I was at school.

WHAT!? Better not be true! One of my favorites when I was in school, and a must-stop location for a meal whenever we come back to town! If true, it is a dark day....

I was just there tonight will passing through Ames. Everything looked like normal. The pork chops are so good, but not on the menu.

I don't want to know how many health code violations that place would generate with a surprise inspection, then again, you could ask that question of th best Chinese restaurants anywhere, and that's an apt description of CHC.

Go to Salween Thai on Douglas. The exterior is gross but the food is amazing.
