CFL Cyclones Weekend 2,3 Jun 2006
After the first weekend of pre-season games (only 2 pre-season games per team in CFL):
Troy Davis - EDMONTON Eskimos : vs. SASKATCHEWAN Roughriders... withheld from competition. (He signed a decent new contract, their starting QB was also withheld). Troy got his CFL Grey Cup Championship ring earlier in the month.
Lance Young - TORONTO Argonauts vs HAMILTON Tiger-Cats : 1 catch for 8 yards. This might be Lance's big chance - after a training camp with the Bengals (NFL 2004) and a stint with the L.A. Avengers (Arena League 2005).
Sheldon Napastuk - CALGARY Stampeders vs B.C. Lions : no stats in the game but in 2005 he was All-West CFL with a team lead in sacks (8) and a heap of tackles. He is also a native Canadian, so he doesn't count against the "import cap" (North Battleford, Ssk native). Chances are he was also withheld from competition as a sure starter as the CFL only has 2 preseason games to evaluate new talent.
--- other notes from outdoor football - maple leaf style---
Former Hawkeye Brad Banks had 2 completions for 15 yards playing for Winnipeg vs Montreal, but Davis, le centre-arrière Jeff Piercy et le demi défensif Chip Cox ont réussi les touchés des Alouettes et Damon Duval a ajouté un placement to win the game, 25-24 (yeah, I had a little help with that). The sparing use of Banks may indicate that he might be that "helpful smile in every aisle" very soon.
Former Dolphin & Texas Longhorn Ricky Williams made a very small splash for Toronto vs Hamilton, 4 carries 7 yards. Last Tuesday, Former Argo Joe Theismann (pronounced "Theeesman") called the signing of Williams a "feeble excuse" by Toronto to sell tickets, he added "[he] was ashamed to have worn the club's old 'A' emblem on his helmet." During a timeout at the game, a video ran on the Jumbotron Scoreboard depicting Theismann wearing a football helmet with the "A" emblem. A giant eraser appeared and rubbed out the "A", then the words "Happy Now Joe?" were displayed, and the crowd showed their approval with a cheer.
