OL and Safeties, Coaches Clanton and Broomfield, Players Tyler Miller, Marcus Neal and Jeremiah Cooper.

Clanton said that Miller is at 6’9” 340 now. Wants to work him on both sides for the flexibility, to appeal to the pros.

Didn’t flat out say it, but it seems blatantly obvious James Neal won the LT—and has improved.

Neal is at 335. Looks solid.

Center will be a tough fight. He said that Jim Bonifas is as smart as anyone, and knows the position.

Among the youngsters, the Helton twins are each working at both C and G.

I think he mentioned Garret Rutledge at RG, but apparently he’s a road grader. At 6’7” that seemed odd—but maybe that’s where they’re breaking him in for a year?

*Inference By Omission
When Clanton mentioned a LOT of IOL, did not mention Deylin Hasert. Still on roster, I assume he’s rehabbing.

When Coach Broom was listing all of the current signees, including those yet to enroll, he did not mention Mason Ellens. The (very stretch) inference here is that Ellens may be at corner when he reports.

Assuming he just didn’t slip his mind.

Ellens may wind up one of the fastest ISU football signees ever—my thoughts.

Coach Broom talked about how physical Marcus Neal is. Marcus said he’s working at Star, sounds like we might have a starter. Along with Coop and Ta’Shawn. I think Jamo Patton will still play a lot.

Sounds like Carson Van Dinter is an athletic monster, but still has some learning to do.

Cam Smith and Drew Surges in the mix, too.

Early enrollee Joshua Patterson working at FS.

Apparently along with WR, Ethan Stecker played DL in HS. Interesting combination. He and LaMarcus Hicks will arrive in summer.

We might have the biggest o-line in the nation this year. Miller and Neal at the tackle spots. Barrett will start, either at LG or C. Buhr, Haysert, Black and Bonifas will compete for the other two spots. That's some good depth.
What impresses me is that we should have actual, workable depth.

Last year they were three guys deep on the interior—and three injuries stretched that to the breaking point. Should have much more flexibility with all the freshmen coming off redshirts.

Ethan Stecker has qualified for the Drake Relays in the 110H Hurdles with a time of 14.59 (14.80 is the qualifying standard). He is striving to repeat as the Class 2A state champion in that event. And yes he played DL on a 3 man front for his high school (Spirit Lake) state runner up football team. The kid is a phenomenal athlete and an even better person!

One Shining Moment just wrapping up and the O Line hype train is ready to leave the station and set the table for disappointment in the fall. A tradition unlike any other.
Let’s do this!!!!!! Woot! Woot!

The O-line may be the biggest, but can they successfully block for those 4th and 6 inch downs? Thinking we need more than beef? LOL. Of course I hope we can get it done this year, I'm getting old.

Means nothing if they can't move their feet. Weren't we the biggest last year in the Big12? The o-line needs to prove themselves this year and this season will hinge on how well they play.

Quietly the o line was a strong unit last year, especially towards the end of the year. You don’t win 11 games without decent o line play. I don’t know if we’ll ever get to 2000s Hawkeyes level of o line play like most here seem to want but it was much much better last year

Where did you see “hype”?

“We might have depth” is “hype”?

Are you smoking something you shouldn’t?

Do you think the actual RB talent was a problem last year? I could see that argument; Hansen was ether hurt or out for the majority of the year. We had ~160 Yd/g which is good for 70th in the country almost exactly average.

I will give the Oline credit they only gave up 16 sacks all year. Good for 16th in the country. So, you may be on to something about them being solid.

When Hansen was in I bet our running efficiency was quite good. And yeah they were elite in pass protection. They were probably our second best unit behind WRs on offense last year

Clanton was talking about how well Miller moves, and called Neal “ultra athletic”.

I dunno. Maybe try paying attention every great once in a while?

I won’t say they were “strong”. It hurt that Jalen Travis started slow, recovering from injury. Then mid year Hasert, Barret and Blsck all got hurt.

Which was the point of, “It would be nice to have depth!!!”

Barret was in and out, Hasert was done, and Bkack was playing hurt.

That said, apparently not totally trashing on the OL out of total ignorance counts as “hype”. Who knew?

I bet they’ll be about as good as last year. We did lose an NFL left tackle but I think the interior will be better. If that’s hype then sign me up for the natty I suppose

The OL looked really good when they were healthy. My only complaint was not opening holes when running to the right.

I would like to see the following lineup...

LT Neal
LG Buhr
C Barrett
RG Black or Hasert
RT Miller

I would lik—er, love Hasert to get and stay fully healthy.

I think he’s the JT of the IOL.

They had moments last year, but lacked consistency. You must have forgot about the ASU game...

They just need to be more consistent from game-to-game.

It's spring ball and there is always a lot of hype. It's the same story year-over-year where they have depth, talent, size, etc and then we can't run the ball or protect the QB. You might want to pay attention to stats....
