Big step closer to proving life on Mars?

Well, for me even if there is proof of ancient life on Mars there has not been any life for some time. Maybe that should tell us something.

I'd bet the farm that nobody reading this post will have a great great grandchild that will see a human set foot on Mars.

Actually some of the evidence suggests there is bacterial activity going on right now, like the spike in methane during warmer months. I don't think anyone is suggesting there's ever been anything other than bacteria at this time.

NASA has plans to send astronauts to Mars as early as next decade. Now that sounds pretty optimistic, but I'm curious as to why you don't think it will happen for potentially hundreds of years?

He's just saying that almost no one reads CF posts and that statistically speaking the few that do make it to Mars will not be our progeny. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, that's a solid bet.

Those willing to speculate seem reasonably certain that whatever life existed when water ran across the Mars surface still exists below the surface. However, funding for space exploration has become so anemic that we may not even ever see the rovers' soil samples returned for examination.

There is also reasonable evidence that some form of microbial life may exist in the atmosphere of Venus. If life exists on three consecutive planets right here in the neighborhood, how common could it be elsewhere?

Now, those folks who believe that gray aliens drove their ‘64 Mustang UFO to Sol to do stellar drugs and butt stuff with Earthlings are NOT helping any cause whatsoever in this realm, but... You don't necessarily have to BE THERE to learn about and benefit from that knowledge.

So thats like 100 years or so. Unless society collapses, eg nuclear war, horrific plague, etc... it will absolutely happen in that timeframe. Hell, if Elons BFR works out well it could happen in 20 years, less if you want to be chancey about it..

Im 52, and expect someone to step foot in MY lifetime.

It's a lot more than 100 years. Somebody reading this at 20 could have a kid in 20 years and if that kid lives to 80 you have 100 years right there. The original post said great great grandchild. So if that kid has a child at 40 and then that kid has a child at 40 and that kid lives to 80 you have 180 years. Nobody today can even imagine what things will be like then let alone make accurate predictions about it.

Correct answer. Live long and prosper.
NASA aims to launch astronauts to Mars by the late 2030s or early 2040s. Making that vision a reality will be challenging. Assuming the funding and technology come into play at the right time, for example, the round-trip travel time would still be about 500 days given the distance between Earth and Mars.

Good luck collecting on the bet though!
