According to this article, here are the top ten best companies to work for in Iowa (I know OP was asking about Central Iowa)

  1. Pella Corporation
  2. FedEx
  3. ALDI
  4. Ankeny Community School District
  5. United States Postal Service
  6. University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics
  7. Siemens
  8. 3M
  9. Iowa City Community School District
  10. Emerson Electric

I'd rather work at John Deere than most of those places. At least those people get a pension. The US Post Office used to be a good place to work but I think it's gone downhill.

I don't trust a lot of these surveys. There are large companies that hire people to do nothing but try and get high on these lists. Most small companies don't have the time/resources to play this game. I'm not saying the company's listed are bad, I just know there is a lot of BS that goes into these surveys.

I can promise you that Aldi's is not the 3rd best place to work.

Where are some of the big construction companies? Elder Corp., Baker Group, Waldinger, McAninch, Turner?

Innovation Refunds in WDM. They cater food twice a week, provide snacks and refreshments unlimited. Excellent pay and also pay health insurance in full

I forgot what company I heard on the radio but they advertised that after overtime you can make up to $52k a year. I was like, you're paying for radio time for that? Not exactly a great ad.

Will have a year in at Deere June 6 and have loved the move. They hired me away from Emerson which I also loved but couldn't compete pay and benefits wise. Pension still available but they offer 401k as equal alternative now and I opted for that route. Was only in the office 10 hours in my first year.

That’s about what our south endzone sponsor pays. Have a friend who was laid off and ended up there. Think they are working 47.5 hour weeks at $19/hour.

This is flat out a requirement for me. My company went full remote back in 2020 and has never looked back. And we've had the best years in company history, since doing so. Remote work is so engrained in our culture now that if they tried to force a return to office, there would be a mutiny. Luckily, upper management has embraced it as much as anyone, so I can't see things changing any time soon.

Consider State/Federal/Railroad - good pensions.

I’ve had experience with banked PTO and unlimited PTO… like others said it really depends on how the company handles it. When we had banked PTO we always had “PTO swarms” where the entire team was constantly taking time off before their non-rollover PTO expired. Unlimited PTO meant that there was no pressure to use unused vacation time before it expired.

I know a lot of people who have quit the railroad the last decade or so. They get furloughed a lot these days. Plus, the hours are absolutely awful until you've been there for about 10 years. Nothing but overnights and weekends. You also lose all of your seniority if you want to move. You are stuck where you're hired out of forever basically.

The only downside to the WFH trend I've noticed is local companies are not having to compete as hard. We are now hiring IT staff from all over the country instead of just Des Moines. Call center positions are not only going to other states, a large percentage are moving overseas. This trend has happened alarmingly fast.

That's awesome. We were full remote and then they hired a micro manager into upper mgmt who is stuck in the past and now they're moving to 4 days in office in most offices. The loss of talent and morale has been staggering, counting the days until I can join them.
