Gateway Market. There's the original on Fleur just south of 235, but they have a second one that I don't remember the location of. The food there (all three meals) will knock you on your back; it's delicious.

That said, I definitely second The Cafe and The Grove in Ames. I've never been to Waveland (though now I'll have to) but those two are the best breakfasts I've had anywhere.

Anyone ever been to a Bill Miller in the San Antonio area? (They have a few stores elsewhere in Texas, but it's mostly SA.) Their "Bill Miller Breakfast" is AWESOME; one of the reasons I love visiting the grandparents.

I ate at The Grove several times and it was pretty good! If anyone takes the time to drive to Ames for breakfast they have to go to The Cafe out on North Stange, right by the newest Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. That place opened up the year before I left town, it was probly the best place Ive ever eaten breakfast at. They use all farm fresh produce from the surrounding area.

We also like Stomping Grounds on Welch Ave. in Ames.

+3 for the Urbandale Cafe. I don't like standing over people while waiting for a table, but damn the food is good. It's too bad that Hy-Vee is buying that entire strip.

West End Diner is pretty good too - it's attatched to the Valley West Inn across from AK's on Westown.

It's in the Ponderosa Village, just south of Mills. Kind of hidden, but there is a lot of signage pointing the way.

Where is this at in the east village?

Waveland...best blueberry pancakes, combine that with the lumberman and you're good 'til dinner.

You know where Waveland is, but you don't know where East Village is? I assume you moved away 4 or 5 years ago? That is an odd question IMO if you live in or around DSM.

My thoughts:

Best places: Waveland on University, Boomers in the East Village, AK O'Conners in Beaverdale (note: not all AK's serve food anymore).

Nah man...I've been through the east village and never seen that place. Now I see that its not really with all those east village shops, and that its kind of down the road in its own little building.

My bad. I read your post wrong.

I agree. The EV doesn't have a lot that I'm interested in, but do think it is a cool piece of downtown for those into shopping and electic stuff. That said, I am big fan of of these East Village establishments:

Olympic Flame - a great dive place with great gyros and other Greek food offerings
House of Bricks - best Reuben in town. (I hear they have some live music once in awhile too:wink:)
Grand Piano Bistro - gotta luv Pianopoolza(sp?) dueling piano guys every Wednesday evening
Locust Tap - great, old dive bar!
