Beavers and Clones to Battle Tomorrow Night by Jerry Hales

I won’t kid myself by acting like Iowa State has been playing like world beaters lately. The good news is, they get a nice weekend road trip to Corvallis, Oregon this weekend to cure what ails them against the Oregon State Beavers. The sportsbooks will likely have ISU as slight underdogs, but you’re a savvy sportsfan, and that’s why you hit up the Hales’ Lock of the Week for all your inside tips. Here is how it’s going to look tomorrow night.
For the first half and change, it’s hard to tell whether there is great defense being played or just abysmal offense. The game seesaws back and forth with neither team leading by more than 5. Seth Tarver and his sidekick/lil’ bro Josh connect on a few threes to offset the inside duo of Craig Brackins and Jiri Hubalek for ISU and keep it close.
With the Cyclones down 3 at 51-48 and just under a minute to go, Diante Garrett is fouled as he knifes into the lane and puts in a teardrop. He connects on the free-throw to tie it with :37 left in regulation. Oregon State calls a timeout and decides to hold for one shot. Coach Jay John draws up the play as Josh Tarver seems preoccupied with the “Nacho Race” on the jumbo tron. Point guard Rickey Claitt stands at the top of the key dribbling down the time, and everybody in the building knows that Seth Tarver is going to come and get it to try and create.
With 10 seconds left, John screams “Now Tarver!!!”. Seth sprints toward the top of the key from the left wing. At the same time, Josh Tarver misunderstands and thinks it is his time to shine, flying in from the right wing. The brothers collide, cracking heads and falling to the ground as the ball squirts free. As Josh and Seth wrestle on the floor and scream at each other, Rahshon Clark picks up the loose ball and takes it down for an emphatic slam at the buzzer. As he is mobbed by the team, he pulls off his jersey to proudly display his cut-off t-shirt which proclaims, “Free Lucca”. Cameramen swarm Clark to close in on his shirt, and media outlets across the country pick up the story about Staiger. Meanwhile, back at NCAA headquarters, Miles Brand storms angrily into his office and slams the door. He shouts at his secretary to hold his calls and begins typing up a new press release entitled “NCAA helps Staiger adjust to college life with a one year ‘vacation’ from competition”.
Again, just one guy’s thoughts on the way the game is going to go down.
