How sad that simply and plainy stating facts is now considered "unprofessional".
The more I learn about this, the more I think Bates Sr. is the selfish brat who is the quitter and Bates Jr. is a kid who just got put in a crappy position because of his dad's selfishness. Face it, at 18-19 we all were in the middle of trying to get seperation from our parents yet know we are still dependent on them. Hopefully, during his time in figuring out where he wants to transfer, he can start to stick up for himself and get seperation from the immature kid in this whole situation, his dad.

I know I made plenty of bad decisions when I was young and I feel sorry for PB for the position he has found himself in - seems similar to WJ's situation (bad decision making by family).
I hope PB's is okay there is much more to life outside of football. I hope someday he finds the strength to see his father for who he is and understand "he is who he is" and love him anyway.
Our concern should be with PB who has always seemed to be a good kid.

I have been doing what I do for a decade. And I have come across more than one situation where a student athlete was a great person, model student, model teammate, great kid....but had a parent that was not like those things at all...and unfortunately, some of their BS got on the kid, if you will.
I just can't imagine having a parent with that much say in a college kid's life. My parents basically had no say and very little input in both my brothers and my college decisions and when it came to my brother deciding whether to go pro or go to college.
I'm sorry but this is not good for recruiting...makes the staff and program look bad no matter who is at fault. Not to mention PB was the guy our staff sent recruits so he still has a relationship with most of them...not good.
No offense, but your parents probably recognized you would not be signing a multi-million dollar contract after your senior year!

Maybe not me, but my brother was one of the top 20 high school players in the country and they let him decide completely on his own then ultimately to sign a pro deal. I almost left school after my sophmore year to go pro and they left the decision completely up to me...
I wish good to PB, wherever he may end up. I can't believe anyone would want to leave his teamates the time in the season, so some serious blame may have to be put on Sr. If PB really wanted to leave right now, then he wasn't right for this team anyways. Good luck PB, but I don't think you are going to find it any easier the next place you go. ( unless you are willing to go to D2) And doubt that would be acceptable to Sr.
Reading PB's Dad quotes in the paper reminded me of an old saying. It'll actually save you time in the long run if you just remember it.....

I agree and the SJ thing is a good example - he stood up to his family to do what was best for him. Eventually you have to be held accountable for your actions no matter the outside influences.
That being said I'm very lucky my parents treated me like an adult when I was that age and let me make my own decisions.
I thought once you decided to play baseball in college, you had to wait three years.

Sorry.......truth in labelling. I don't hold anything against Phillip for quitting, but quit is what he did. You can throw any label you want on it, but it doesn't change what happened.
