Bates' father speaks out

I'd like to know what his definition of "quitting" is.
I mean I can see if he left during the offseason..that's a different story.
But up and leaving in the middle of a season is quitting. I don't care who you are.

“You’ll have to talk to Phillip about his plans,” Bates said. “All I’m asking is that the Iowa press call Chizik on calling Phillip a quitter.”
Well, since Dad didn't give any reasons, other than he is pissed his son was called a quitter, why even talk to anyone on the record? You issue a denial, but you don't provide anything of substance for the decision to leave...
Other than being ticked Bates' shirt was burned last year.
I am not saying that I totally disagree with him about being irritated with that, but that's something that should have been addressed if it was a big point of contention.
In the end, if Philip really wants to play QB somewhere, he had his chance to earn the job this year...A big chance, and several of them. Arnaud is a much better passer...much better. And perhaps the kid does need a redshirt year to improve on that.
Dad saw the handwriting on the wall that Arnaud was going to likely be the QB at ISU for the next few years, or at least, that is how he saw it. And they left, and leaving midway through the year is quitting....unless Gene flat lied to them, which I doubt happened.
Seen this movie before.
Philip will transfer, he will have his redshirt year, and he will get to pick a situation that he feels is more suitable to win a starting job in.
But note to the Bates family; other schools won't stop recruiting quarterbacks either...and when they bring you in, there is going to be a kid and parents that will be ticked off about that, because that wasn't in their plans, either.
I said on my show today that I guarantee we hear from Dad soon on this, because he is not going to like the conversations taking place. That didn't take long, and it won't be the last we hear from him.

Bates' dad has pushed the staff since the beginning to do things his way and that is simply not how they work. Daddy wanted Bates to be the number one started and flat out called the staff liers when they suggested that he wasn't the stronger QB in practices. When faced with the fact that his son son would not be the starting QB without earning the job, daddy took Philip aside and told him he was quitting the team.
So in essence, Philip Jr didn't quit, as his dad says - his dad yanked him because he didn't get his way.

Interesting..... I can see his beef with burning the redshirt for a limited role as a receiver. I questioned that myself. But I suppose the pulled it because they thought he could play a bigger role at WR than he really could.

4 issues i have with this article...
1) why is it being released from Waco, Texas AP?
2) whats so wrong with calling Phillip a quitter? he quit did he not.
3) who are you, Phil Sr., to judge the coaches decisions in the Kent St game? you arent the coach.
4) yes Phillip was the model, student, athlete and citizen...he was, right up until the point when he quit on his teammates.

Sounds like Papa Bates thinks he was an assistant coach or something. Geeze, can you imagine if every parent would get upset about what plays their kid is in on? The job of a head coach would be more impossible than it is already.

- "We supported Iowa State, even his freshman year when they pulled the bogus redshirt year off him, when they stole the redshirt year from him." - not Bates' decision.
- “He helps you beat Iowa, but even at receiver he never played.” - so, now he wants Bates in at receiver, taking time away from training at QB? That would certainly slowed his progress for this year...

I think Iowans, and even members of our media, are smart enough to see and understand what's going on. All Chizik has to do when asked about this situation is say "We've dealt with the issue, we've moved on, and I will not be commenting on it further."
Don't fuel the drama. Phil Sr. will continue to ***** and moan, but in the minds of any intelligent football fan, it will be a dead issue.
Move on and grow from it. Don't let Phil Sr. and his son hurt you twice.
