It's pretty easy to make the argument that it wasn't smart to waste his redshirt. But we don't know the circumstances behind the scenes of how badly he wanted to play, if part of the recruiting was a promise that he wouldn't redshirt, if he even wanted to play WR, etc.
Wow.. just read that article for the first time. What a baby. I love the part where it says Bates was sacked for huge losses twice, and then AA took over and lead the team to a touchdown.
Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but I like to win, and if AA gave us the best chance to win, shouldn't we play him?

Couldn't be any further from the truth. It would have been in ISU's best interest to redshirt Bates last year. They had Meyer with Arnaud to back him up. It would have created a separation in years between AA & PB.
I have heard and believe multiple opinions from people close to the program that the Bates family (specifically pbSR) insisted that Phil be allowed to play last year. If not, he would have bolted last year. It fits their agenda. They looked at AA as competition and didn't want to see him get a leg up on the job for this year. It also saved the redshirt year to be used if and when they decided to quit (errrr transfer). A transfer who has already burned his redshirt year is much less in demand.
But does that even matter? Bates wasn't getting his shot THIS YEAR. Even with the redshirt on Bates last year, Arnaud was still going to be the better QB and Bates wasn't going to start THIS YEAR. Bates was gone regardless - the burning of the redshirt is what we like to call an excuse around here.
I understand his dad wanting to stand up for his son, lets face it he walked out on his team 2 days before a very winnable game. I would call that quitting.

I pity the next coach who recruits er gets to have Bates on his team...dont make the crybaby unhappy or old Bates will quit at mid season....AGAIN:yes:

Leaving before something is over is quitting, plain and simple. Perhaps Sr thinks since he told Jr he should leave for a different situation that it wasn't "quitting".
I won't disagree with the redshirt bit. I thought he was totally underused after the Iowa game(of course I thought they should've thrown to Blythe more as well but the staff clearly had their own ideas).
And I didn't totally agree with how they handled the two QB system. Regardless if you are up 14-0 or down 0-14. If you say the other QB will see the field in the first half, then he should. Personally, I would've liked to see Bates get the start in one of the games just to see what he could do, but it didn't happen. So I agree with Sr in that it wasn't equal, but thats also because AA has produced more.
And finally, since when can a dad call to get his kid released from his scholarship. I thought something like that had to be submitted in writing from the kid to be official. I guess it probably was but thats not how it was reported.

I trust everyone is aware that he still HAS a redshirt year left because they pulled it last year.
So if he went to, say, NE, he would have to sit a year due to NCAA rules, sit a year due to Big XII rules, but would still have two years of eligibility although one of those would be a redshirt year.

I thought Bates was dinged up last year and that's why he wasn't used much during the second half of the season. Does anyone else remember it this way?
Bates has 2 to play. He'll burn his redshirt sitting next year, and if he plays in the Big XII will lose a year of eligibility. Giving him 1 year.
If he goes anywhere else in FBS (I assume pops wouldn't stoop to letting Junior go to FCS) yes he will have 2 to play with his redshirt.
Edit - I think I misread you... we both agree he will only have 1 year to play in the Big XII, 2 years to play anywhere else
