Edit: The title should have said 1988 not 1998. Not sure how to fix that.

Ran across this Barry Sanders highlight video from his Heisman trophy year.

Three things that really struck me about this video.

1. I will never get tired of watching Barry run. He was amazing.

2. I always liked our helmets from that year, but the colors hurt my eyes.

3. Jack Trice is stunningly empty in this video.

Barry's highlights versus ISU are near the end of the video. About six minutes in.

Couple things.

Those uni's were freaking ugly as hell.

I think there may have been more people in the stands for this year's spring scrimmage than there were in the stands in that vid.

Barry Sanders was definitely my favorite player to watch in the NFL that I can remember, and I'm even a Vikings fan! Hard to believe that he was a backup at OSU (granted, to Thurman Thomas) until his junior year (which was probably the greatest single season in college football history).

We lost 49-28. Barry had 33 rushes for 293 yards (found it on a website).

We finished 4-5 and in 5th place in the Big 8.

OSU - even with Barry's remarkable season - finished 10-2 and in 3rd place behind OU and Nebby (of course).

ISU was up 28-21 less than a minute into the 4th quarter of that one. Then it was the Barry Sanders Show, with cameo appearances by Mike Gundy and Hart Lee D y k e s.

FWIW I remember Pete Taylor once saying that Barry Sanders actually verbally committed to ISU before signing with Oklahoma State. Add him to the list of "almost" Cyclones.

Barry is why I am a Lions fan. I remember the arguments about if Barry or Emmit was better, and it would drive me nuts.

I too doubt we will see anyone like him in my lifetime. Every once and awhile you'll hear about LT or Peterson, but that talk is short lived once they view Barry's film again.

It truly amazes me what you can find in five minutes of searching on Google. I found these two stories which may prove Pete to be right. Not that I would have doubted him...

In reply to the Barry Sanders recruiting question. I was a teammate of his in his senior season. Nobody wanted Barry! KU and K State both said he was too small. Emporia State was interested and a couple of other small colleges. Oklahoma State (Pat Jones, Head Coach) was the ONLY D1 school who offered him a chance. They had Thurman Thomas at the time and offered Barry a chance to come to OSU on a scholarship as a Specialist to return kick and punts. Good job Coach Jones! ....

1. Jones is associated with perhaps the greatest find of all time: Barry Sanders.
An elusive little back out of Wichita, Kansas, Sanders drew little interest as a recruit, not even from the struggling home state schools, KU or Kansas State.
Tulsa wanted him. So did Iowa State.
And, eventually, Oklahoma State.
George Walstad, a Cowboys assistant at the time, turned Jones onto Sanders. It was Jones’ trust in the veteran coach and recruiter that allowed him to take a chance on a player that few others wanted.
“Every staff, and it’s the same way in evaluating the (NFL) draft, but as the head coach, you’re going to have certain assistants that you trust a bit more,â€￾ Jones said. “You trust their evaluative skills, they have a proven track record.
“You always try to identify those guys around the table when you’re the decision maker. And everybody will have a couple of guys you put a little more stock in what they say, more than other guys. You don’t ever tell people that, but you do.â€￾
Walstad was such a guy.
“If he came back and said, ‘This guy up here can really go, coach. He’s not as tall. He played wingback…’â€￾ Jones said.
“And we sent Bill Shimek, our running backs coach. He signed (Billy) Sims and (David) Overstreet and other guys at OU. Bill went up there with George, watched a little bit of film and shut it off. They could tell.â€￾

lol @ the amount of fans in Jack Trice for that game. Wow. About 12 people combined on all the hillsides. Maybe 8 people sitting in the endzone.

I watched it as well. My marching band career ended that day. We were indeed in the game well into the 2nd half. Then it was just Barry being Barry.

The weather was better than the Okie State game in 1985 however. We beat them as a top 10 or 15 team if I remember. Thurman Thomas couldn't survive that cold day in Ames. Coldest game I've ever been to. The high was 20 and it had snowed a few days before that. Not a fun day to be in marching band.

Which year it was I don't remember, but one of the games in 80's vs OSU was about 10 degrees and minus 10 wind chill. I think there was a total of 2,000 in the stadium for the first half, and less than 1,000 for the second half. Maybe '84 or '86. It was one nasty game, we may have even won that one.

I was also there for this one (85) and I believe they (OSU) may have actually been in the top 10. It was incredibly cold and I remember when we went onto the field after the game that the turf was so slippery that you had to be careful not to fall. I think we had a pretty decent crowd that braved that frigid day in 85.

I was at that game, too. I loved watching Barry. I couldn't believe we were in that game - Okie State was very good that year. We were actually a decent squad that year. As someone mentioned, we had the lead believe it or not late in the game. Then...Barry happened. I actually ran on the field and talked to him after the game.

I can't remember exactly what year it was either but it was BY FAR the coldest I've ever been at a football game. If I can find some of my old slides from that day I'll post a couple.
