I couldn't agree more. Raw carrots are the bee's knees yo.

You just need to try properly prepared cooked carrots... Frozen, garbage. Boiled, garbage. Overcooked and mushy garbage...

I saute fresh carrots in butter with shallots for a few minutes, then put a few tablespoons of honey and water, salt and a decent amount of fresh black pepper... They caramelize and get a honey glaze on them. Haven't met anyone who hasn't been converted yet... They should be tender but with a bit of crispness still.

Also, try drizzling olive oil and roasting fresh organic carrots (the ones with the greens still on) in a sheet pan with turnips and parsnips at like 400 degrees or so. They caramelize and are pretty spectacular this way.

I promise that if you can try either of these two methods with an open mind you'll be pleasantly surprised, and perhaps even converted...

Back to the question... Preground black pepper is disgusting (restaurant black pepper may be the worst)... Might as well sprinkle sawdust on your food. Must be like 10% black pepper, gypsum to keep it separated, and other organic filler. Horrible stuff.

Find yourself some black tellicherry peppercorns and see what you've been missing... They have the same pepper taste, but without as much typical black peppercorn heat... I have a hard time finding tellicherry peppercorns now that I'm back in MN, (at least at a respectable price), so I've been using the regular ones, but keep overseasoning with them as i'm used to the tellicherries...

Really? Now I'm not saying it's fine dining by any means, but Applebee's isn't bad imo. & if it's anywhere near the worst tasting thing you've ever eaten, you should probably get out more...

Applebees has gone downhill, however. Really far down a really huge ******* hill.

I live in Chicago. My dining options are infinite. Applebee's in Ames is disgusting.

Also, I'm in the minority here but I can't stand coconut.

I agree. Compare apples to apples (pun intended); Applebee's doesn't try to be anything more than a quick, economical place where you can reliably order something and know what you're going to get (mostly because it's pre-made and microwaves do the cooking). It's not Le Cirque, but it's great at what it tries to be.

I was in Galena Illinois last summer and went into a hot and spicy snack store. They had a bowl of spicy spanish peanuts and I decided to sample a few. They were so hot they brought a tear to my eye, without thinking I wiped my eye with my finger. Unfortunately I did not wipe the hot **** off my finger and got it in my eye, then the tears really started to flow.

My GF poured a 20 oz. bottle of cold water over my eye which made it feel a little better, it took a couple of days before my eye felt better.

What was the name of this store?

Coconut- not good
Peas- good as long as they are fresh or frozen, canned peas are turrible
Cilantro- good as long as it isnt too overpowering
liver- not good
tomatoes- Shouldn't even be listed on this discussion since they are wonderful
pickled herring- good
cooked carrots- not good unless they are my wife's whiskey glazed carrots
Applebees- not good
Lima beans- not good

Buddy at work is Korean, he gets some crazy stuff. Most of it is pretty good (I love me some moon pies) but there is the brown/orange chewy dry cake be brings in about once or twice a year. I hate to tell him no thank you, but I can't choke these things down. It leaves a taste in my mouth that hard liquor can't remove from my taste-buds or my memory.
