As I was scouring for some good info on the Rays win last night (yes, I'm a fan & have lived down there for a decade but am currently in Korea), I found an interesting headline regarding former Cyclone Atif Austin down in the Tampa Bay Area.

Florida high school sports | Tarpon Springs dismisses coach Atif Austin (updated: 7:34 p.m.)

Too bad, sounds like it was a bit of an overreaction and the kid (Pappas) even mentions how good a coach Austin was. Although it does sound like Austin was making changing for the program & it may have been rubbing people the wrong way. Either way, it sucks cause I was hoping this would open more of a pipeline to the area as it's thick w/DI talent.

GO STATE!

Atif was a really nice guy, had a few classes with him. Bummer about losing his job.

Yeah, from reading it again, it might have been a case of him & the school's administration butting heads on things & they found a way to eliminate their 'problem' coach very easily.

I agree, he was a nice guy the couple times I talked to him, too.

That sucks for Atif. Always seemed like a nice guy.

On a lighter note, Tarpon Springs in pretty bad***. Visited there last time I was in Florida and thought it was pretty unique, especially down by the sponge docks.

Atif taught my football theory class at UNI, he was a good guy...he told the class the first day wearing any Hawkeye gear would not be allowed

We go down to that area of Florida every year, and visit Tarpon Springs each time. Nice little area. Good greek food. Howard Beach is one of our favorite beaches down in Florida.

I had him too. Good coach. With my connection to ISU athletics, we had some good conversations. You werent in there the semester that his wife made him get snipped were you?

it sounds like someone was looking real hard for a reason to get rid of him. Throwing a ball in practice is probably less strenuous than carrying a back pack to school.
