Anyone else like to Camp?

I love to camp. I don't think that sleeping in a sooped up RV really counts. This is a fancy as I get. I bought a tent that sits in the bed of my 1968 Ford F 100. I spend a lot of weekends at a reservoir with lots of rocks, so this keeps me off the hard, rocky ground.

I've worked at a camp in western Montana for kids, teens, and young adults with cancer for the past two summers. Seeing kids who wouldn't have been able to do some of the things that we take for granted while they're out there really makes it worthwhile. Definitely makes me not care a bit about sleeping out under the stars on the actual "camp-out night" (campers normally stay in cabins that are pretty modern, really). Anyway, I'm looking forward to the summer so I can get out there again.

I can't wait.

I spent the summer of '08 in the Prescott National Forest just outside of Prescott, AZ (2 hrs north of Phoenix) working at a similar camp. This summer I'm headed out to a camp in the Pocono Mountains in NE Pennsylvania. I'm excited to return to another camp. Ive found it as a very cool way to be able to travel to different parts of the country to live for a short while without having to uproot my entire life and move. Also, the places ive worked at are beautiful fun places and really rewarding to get to work with the kids. Also loved laying under the stars in the mountains of AZ, falling asleep to the sounds of nature. I love camping!

My best friend from back home and I often load up his canoe with a cooler full of booze, a couple of cans of food suitable for making on the fire, some knives and fishing poles and go out and live for a few days. I would like to do an 'into the wild' type of thing for a couple of weeks to see if we could, but I am not spontaneous enough.

Yes, love it. However my tent of 18 years took its last trip last year. Its time for a new one. Anyone have a Coleman Weathermaster 6, 8, or 10? We kind of like the layout and hinged door of them, but want to know how well they hold up. Any other suggestions?

A couple times every summer, a big group of my friends gets together and canoes or tubes the Upper Iowa River around Kendallville and Bluffton (sort of between Cresco and Decorah). Usually we get hauled up river and float back to our campground. We've had some pretty epic trips down that river. Lots of booze + good friends + being outside in the most scenic part of Iowa = incredible. In case you're unaware of the landscape in that part of the world, here's a picture

That is a great experience! Did it many years ago and absolutely loved it. You wouldn't believe that you were in Iowa!

I agree, however at a certain age it becomes advisable to hang up the tent and sleep in a a bed, besides the wife and cats and granddaughter won't travel any other way!:biglaugh:

I am the only person in our family who likes to camp.

My idea of a good time would be canoe camping down the Mississippi, around Florida, and then back up the intercoastal waterway for a year.

But I love my wife and will not do it, probably. She is allergic to camping.

Here is a picture of a group that I caught camping down the Mississippi River last fall. Excuse the poor picture quality as I had about a 40x zoom on in order to get their picture. Looks like a lot of fun.

Yup. If you asked 100 people on the street in NYC where that picture was taken, I guarantee not ONE of them would say Iowa.

I also absolutely love camping. Not much better than a day on the water then sitting around the campfire with good friends, good boozed and good food. Can't get enough of it and plan on trying to make a lot of weekend trips this summer.

Along with the Upper Iowa River trip a few have discussed I have to throw in a plug for a tubing trip down the Niobrara River near Valentine, NE. We have made this an annual trip with friends and it is a fantastic time with great scenery. The ecosystem is so diverse there you'll see pine trees with cactus, and some pretty sweet waterfalls for being in Nebraska (i.e. Smith Falls.) It's an interesting drive into the middle of nowhere but I highly suggest giving it a try sometime. It's also very light on the pocket. If you go stay at Smith Falls State Park it's a very nice campground.

I've gone from tent camping as a kid all the way through a couple of pop-up campers with my son to now a motorhome. The motorhome is itching to hit the road as we didn't take it anywhere this winter. It's been a long winter! I haven't made any plans yet where we'll be going, but one trip will be Table Rock Lake to Nashville and back. Tailgating at the football games is a given.:yes:

We went to Table Rock last year and had a great time, the water was very nice. We also went through Nashville (different trip), stayed near Opryland, that was a little bit of a disappointment but there appear to be many fine places in TN to camp.

The Table Rock Lake to Nashville trip will be to visit relatives. I've checked out RV parks near both places and it looks like there are some great ones. It'll be a good time.
