ISU-MU-1990.jpg

This was a blustery day with the wind barreling out of the north. The sun came out every once in awhile. JTS was wide open at that time and operating in full wind tunnel mode.

The details are fuzzy, but here goes...ISU was behind and scored a touchdown to go up 24-23. On the impending conversion try, the kick was blocked, or ISU was going for two...I don't remember exactly, but in any case some mistake happened and the ball was returned by MU for two points (the defense could return conversions for points in those days), to put MU up 24-25. Another one of those crazy plays where an ISU lead turns into a deficit one play later.

ISU got the ball back, and had a chance for a game-winning (I think it was the last play of the game) 40 yd-ish FG...on the north end, right into that blasting wind. My buds and I were sitting on the west side, right along the back of the north endzone line (with my parents, who came to visit that weekend). ISU's kicker (Shudak I think) blasted it right into that wind. Initially, the kick looked like it would go 50+ yds, and then at the last second the old wind grabbed the ball and it seemed to stop in mid air.

We were all (including my dad) freaking as the the ball started falling almost straight down. It kept falling...and cleared the crossbar by a few inches...

ISU Wins 27-25!!! ISU Wins!!!

Can't the defense still return conversions for points today? Just asking.

I like how we use the school colors to paint the endzone. Maybe when we get new grass we'll see this return.

ISU was up 24-19 in the 1990 game. Mizzou scored a TD and missed the two-point conversion, going up 25-24. ISU went 61 yards in 1:24, and then Shudak hit a 36-yarder with 0:14 left -- his fifth FG of the day, a new record.

The 1991 game AT Missouri was the one with a wild two-point conversion attempt at the end, with ISU holding on for a 23-22 win in absolutely frigid weather. ISU QB Kevin Caldwell wore gloves the whole game -- and not those "receiver"-style gloves, either. REAL winter gloves. (We only threw 5 passes all game.)

Glad that your memory is better than mine. I guess I should be thankful that I remembered where I had those pictures...

Although I still think something goofy must have happened to ISU on a conversion attempt in this game, because ISU had 5 FG, 2 TD, and no extra points. Wasn't Shudak perfect on extra points in 1990?

Just watched the game again, and we were both right...kind of.

1st Quarter
7:50 - MU - Jeff Jacke 26 FG (0-3)
1:50 - ISU - Shudak 33 FG (3-3)

2nd Quarter
13:05 - ISU - Shudak 26 FG (6-3)
1:44 - MU - Johnson 3 pass [jump ball to TE on 4th and goal] (6-10)
0:00 - MU - Johnson 52 pass [hail mary tipped in the air, caught in end zone] (6-17)

3rd Quarter
8:27 - ISU - Pedersen 42 pass to Glotfelty, 2pt pass incomplete (12-17)
3:54 - ISU - Bryant 5 run, 2pt run no good (18-17)
3:54 - MU - Defensive 2pt conversion [89yd fumble return on Bryant's 2pt run] (18-19)

ISU's Shaun Walker got a pick, and then all hell broke loose. A fight erupted on the ISU sideline, outside the bench area. Lots of punches thrown by players (and one by Jon Fabris, too!). Over 60 seconds of solid chaos. Resulted in multiple ejections.

0:50 - ISU - Shudak 51 FG (21-19)

4th Quarter
8:37 - ISU - Shudak 41 FG (24-19)

Bryant fumbled inside the MU red zone with 2:29 left.

1:38 - MU - Johnson 65 pass, 2pt pass short (24-25)
0:14 - ISU - Shudak 36 FG (27-25)

Both of Shudak's 4th-quarter attempts made it about 2-3 yards through the uprights, and then fell pretty much straight down due to the wind.

Thanks for the recap! What a whacky emotional roller coaster game.

I was kind of surprised that Shudak couldn't hook up in the NFL. He hit some long FG's for ISU.
