In town tomorrow night for a concert. Pick a restaurant for me. I made a reservation at +39, but I've also heard good things about Maude's and I think there's a somewhat new Italian place somewhere else whose name escapes me.

Maude's is great, as is The Spice, but I would stick with +39. Haven't tried the new place at Lucullans.

Paying for multiple kids in college has kind of taken us out of fine dining. Good to hear Maude's is still great. Maybe we can try +39 when one of the kids lands a big job and takes us out.

Definitely go with Tiptop, if you can't swing the money for that....I'd try Casey's pizza or Wendy's.

The wife and I went to +39 a month ago or so, it was good, nice atmosphere, good service, her pasta was much better than my pizza. I'd choose The Cafe over +39 any day, but Maude's is always good although I haven't been there for dinner in a long time.

Keep in mind this is fine dining Ames style, we're not talking $50-75 a plate or anything, probably $20-25 for a steak on the high end of things.

On the plus side, they're not as snooty when you ask for BBQ sauce with your steak

Is Lucullans gone? I used to go there on Fridays, buy one beer, and eat the free happy hour food for dinner back in the day. Always thought I should go back some time and actually pay for food.

That's why I love Ames. Small town Iowa, with bigger amenities, so you can get everything you want without putting up with the muckity muck attitude of some metro areas.

It is! It had gone downhill for a while. :-(

Lucullan's location is now Bar la Tosca or something like that.

Thanks for the info on Lucullan's guys. Of course I hadn't been there since the 80's. Bar la Tosca? Not a fan of the name.

I'd say none. But if you are looking for the best food in Ames. +39, The Cafe, Wallabys, Olde Main. Olde Main probably shouldn't be on that list.

Lucullans itself got rid of the bar area downstairs several years ago, to our dismay. It was bought by Jon Reed a year or so ago. He closed it, remodeled and just reopened as Bar La Tosca. See this Ames Trib article http://amestrib.com/news/bar-la-tosca-latest-downtown-dining-option
