My nephew is taking his daughter up to Ames this weekend for a youth basketball tournament
and I am looking for a good restaurant for them. I am looking for something local, not a chain,
and not Hickory Park because we live in the middle of BBQ heaven. Thank you for your help.

Boulder Taphouse is good. Love there cheese curd squares and great wings. West Town Pub the tournament is at the facilities in West Ames. Wallaby's in North Ames. Dublin is solid also.

Where is this magical land you speak of? As for Ames, have him take her for pizza at Great Plains, or try The Cafe. Can't go wrong with either one.

Where are they at on the Food-Snob-O-Meter?

I've eaten at The Cafe and Plus 39 recently, and they were both very good.
I haven't been to Dublin Bay in a decade or more, but that's where we'd go for "someplace nice" in college.

My wife always liked GeAngelos for pizza. We went back 2 or 3 years ago and it was still good. Great Plains is overrated, but a guy could do worse than that for pizza.

And there's always Taco Johns. Taco Tuesday was always big for us in school!

I assumed he meant KC and his location is Olathe, so...probably KC.

He for damn sure doesnt mean Texas. BBQ here sucks. Texans wont tell you that but they dont know any better. They dont know about things outside of Texas.

Thank you for all the responses. He will be with his 10 year old daughter and on the road so they
will probably want casual and cheap. Yes we are in Olathe and about 3 minutes from Joe's KC, 10 minutes
to Q39, my favorite, and 15 minutes from Jack Stack.

Q39 is fantastic. Mmmmmm

I'd do Dublin Bay, The Cafe, Provisions, or Boulder Taphouse.

Personally, I was never very impressed with Jack Stack. Now Gates on the other hand...

Eating in Ames is all about the size of your group, how big of a food snob you are and how long you want to wait. If there is 2-6 people, I'd say Great Plains. Any more and you'll never get a seats. Outside of that, I'd say Hickory Park or Jethros. I don't get the comment about BBQ...neither one of those places are BBQ. Sure, they have smoked meats, but no one goes to Hickory Park for their ribs or brisket.

Other than those three, the pub grub kind of place would work... Dublin Bay, West Town Pub, Wallabys. All are pretty good. And then if you are a little more food snobby, The Café and Aunt Maudes.

I haven't heard of Q39. Thanks for the suggestion, as I'll be down in KC in a few weeks. I really like Joe's and Jack Stack. As far as Italian in KC, have you tried Osteria Il Centro? My wife and I and another couple really enjoyed that. (Sorry to get off-topic!)

If you can get served. Tried to go there for lunch today, and there's some kind of breakdown in the process. Tons of servers just standing around, but zero food coming out of the kitchen. We waited for an hour to get our food, and it never did come. They just kept saying "just a few more minutes." We finally told them to cancel the order, and left. And we weren't the only ones. Everybody there was waiting forever for their food. I realize they're still new, so they might be experiencing some growing pains, which is why I'm not ready to throw in the towel on them, but if the OP is looking for a place to go this weekend, Boulder may not be the best experience. Not unless they get the kinks worked out quickly.
