wow, those are ridiculous. If my parents lived in Ames their property tax would be almost half of what they pay in the NW suburbs of Chicago. 260k assessed in Ames is about 4k, while they are paying almost 8k.

Ames DOES have a higher housing cost just based on house prices. There are significantly fewer houses in Ames between $140k - $200k than there are in other similar sized towns. Lots of stuff available for $250+, but it's hard to find something affordable for younger families. My parents just moved across town a couple years ago, and the house they left was listed at (I think) $180k. In three days on the market they had gotten four offers and finally accepted an offer after five days on the market. There is lots of demand and little supply for houses in that price range here right now.
