Alford continued his whining about the NIT last night during his call-in show according to Cotlar this morning. The excerpt that he played had Steve comparing UI with NC State and exclaiming that he didn't understand how a team can get hot for a weekend and that weighs more than the season. Besides the obvious hypocrisy of his statement about giving too much weight to a good weekend in a conference tournament (pot meet kettle), he should really know what he is talking about before making such statements.

NC State - beat #1 seed UNC, #4 seed Virginia, #5 seed Virginia Tech 3 times, including by 11 on the road and 25 at home, beat Michigan and lost to Alabama and had 7 of their losses against teams seeded #6 or better, with bad losses at Cincinnati and Miami Fla, both last place in their conference although Miami has 3 victories over teams seeded #4 in the NCAA.

Iowa - best wins were at home against #9 seed Purdue, #9 MSU, and #12 Illinois; they had losses against the worst team in the Big 10, the worst team in the Pac 10, lost by 29 to #9 seed Villanova, lost by 32 at #9 seed MSU, lost by 19 to #9 seed Purdue on a neutral site, lost by 16 to the 8th best team in the MVC, lost at home to the 5th best team in the MVC and when comparing common opponents - did beat Michigan and lose to Alabama just like NC State, but UI also lost to Va Tech.

There is absolutely no comparison between NC State and Iowa as to who is more deserving.

NC State is by far more deserving.

That made me giggle. Two hot weekends are why he has a job.

He didn't complain in the past when the Hawks got hot for 1 weekend in the Big 10 Tournament that helped them get NCAA berths.

He's grasping for anything right now because he knows he's in the hot seat.

While I am surprised that Iowa didn't make NIT and would be frustrated if situation was reversed and it was ISU. The Alford argument is hilarious. Great job of laying out the facts. Enjoy some rep!

It just smacks of a sinking ship. It's not Steve's fault his team didn't make it to the NIT! Don't you know, it's never Steve's fault:rofl8yi:

Right. And I didn't hear him complaining when Iowa backed into the post season because Ohio State was still on suspension a few years back.

Welcome to Iowa City. Nothing is ever the Hawkeyes' fault, especially not in Carver or Kinnick. The whole planet just conspires against them over its morning bowl of Dastardly-O's.

Not to quibble with your argument, but Iowa did beat #7 seed Indiana at home as well, which would technically be their best win.

Isn't "getting hot" for a weekend exactly what SA, players and fans were counting on again this year, knowing they were limping into tourney with only 17 wins? Doesn't our own media like to nickname the Big 10 tourney the "Steve Alford Invitational" because "getting hot" for a weekend is exactly how he has made it into the NCAA before?

I agree with you Klerme, I couldn't believe the clip Cottlar played from SA's call in show Monday night with him complaining about some other team getting into the NIT just because they got hot for a weekend.

Complaining about not going to the NIT is like complaining that the smelly kid at school didn't invite you to his birthday party at Build A Bear.

He probably has already blamed the season on his players at least 2 times. If it would have been a good season, he would have given himself the credit.

You are right, I did miss that one. I am probably just in denial that Indiana even received a #7 seed without recording a single road or neutral site win against a team that made the NCAA tourney.

I never thought I would be quoting Bob Huggins, but Mr. Alfraud:

"You Should Have Won More Games."

at Penn State & the Tourney Game against Purdue in particular.

I'm sure there's a Indiana High School Coaching job available...

My brother in Iowa City just called me, he is frantic about our board and all the Alford negative post. LOL, the Suckeye nation is NUTS over this. I suggested he go to the next EIU Suckeye luncheon and propose extending Alford's contract for 15-20 years. Hell, we clones might even contribute to the cause...........what GREAT MESSAGE BOARD FODDER THIS IS........
