Very different out of bounds rules. What would the score have been with three point takedowns?

Nobody talks about how Owings wrestled most of the season at 150/158, won the Pac-8 at 158, then dropped down two weights for NCAAs. Different rules for a different time.
Owings dropped to specifically take on Gable. He was talking big and super-confident that he could beat him and sounded like a guy who believed it.
The guy was "in a zone" that athletes rarely feel and he knew it. (It was like Lafester talking big before the Iowa game in 87 when he scored 56.)
I was there at Northwestern for the match 55 years ago.
I'll always remember the third period takedown and back points he threw on Gable to win it.

Never knew this. But watching the match again with this knowledge it’s clear from the start Gable seems almost physically outmatched. Also appears that his spinning under arm take down wrenches both Gable’s arms.

Gable looked shocked to even be in a match, let alone behind. Also, he was a clock watcher....:)

I think this was back in the day when they taped the finals and showed a few matches on Wide World of Sports a week or two later. Everybody (at least in Iowa) thought he was completely unbeatable. I remember the shock of hearing about and later seeing him beaten.

I don't recall Gable crawling off the mat multiple times, getting a stall penalty and taking time outs for shoe laces and contacts. I wonder if Metcalf ever gave up a stall point.

Too bad so many west coast schools gave up wrestling and I think even K State had a program back then. Times have changed for sure.

Great clip of old time wrestling. Thanks for posting.

Watching the video, I never noticed the size disparity until know. It is astonishing. How did Owings even make weight? Also, those back points sure looked pretty quick......
