As brutal as most of the semis were, surprisingly the average margin was 4 PPG closer than last year's semis.

Haven't seen any of the 8-man, 2A or 3A teams this year, but if these four win they'd all be repeat champions I think.

Don't think anyone's made it to the finals with 4 losses. There were so many years where it was impossible to even make the postseason with more than 2.

There have been 3 champs with 3 losses (Heelan, 9-3, 1982; Waterloo Columbus, 10-3, 2004; Newell-Fonda, 11-3, 2014).

Pella was in the finals in 2009 at 10-3, but lost to Harlan.
I graduated in the late 90’s and we barely got into the 1A playoffs with one loss.

If they made an even split those schools would be around 25th in BEDS with a flat to negative enrollment trend. It isn’t like Ankeny or Waukee splitting with massive growth.

Not that having two schools of that size might not be better, but I’m guessing it’s a lot cheaper to run one large school. I’m not sure what kind of open enrollment and private school losses they see, but maybe splitting into two smaller schools would reduce that.
The school district knew they were land locked so they built the Freshman high instead of splitting. Ankeny and Waukee basically have unlimited growth potential, those districts are huge.

Give me Grundy over Britt, but otherwise you're dead on.

CL/GLR and Harlan win 2A/3A.

I got nothing on 8-Man.

I’m thinking it’s grundys year. After 3 runner ups in a row, odds have to be in their favor. Go with the Minnesota randy moss offense. Keep running verticals if they have speed guys and it will get nasty.

L-S vs Brit (A) was close and Dowling vs Valley (5A) was close. The rest were blowouts weren't they? Closer average than last year? Wow.

Eh, Britt pretty much dominated that game. Their style just doesn't really lend itself to blowing decent teams out. There wasn't a point where you legitimately felt like L-S was going to win that game.

Well OK but LS did have first down on the Britt 15 yard line down by 8 with a couple minutes left in the game. They had a shot at least.

With the exception of 5A (Valley getting by #1 Dowling) this is just about as chalk of a championship round as you could possibly come up with.

By RPI:
5A - #14 v #2
4A - #3 v #1
3A - #2 v #1

By consensus polls:
2A: #2 v #1
1A: #3 v #1 (West Sioux was #2 in a couple of polls, but West Branch/Underwood were also up there)
A: #2 v #1
8P: #2 v #1

None of the teams playing Thursday have lost all season. Take away Valley, and Friday‘s other 7 teams have lost a total of 4 games, and 3 of those were to teams also playing in the championships (Harlan to Lewis Central, Van Meter to Williamsburg, West Sioux to Central Lyon/GLR).

I think these are the title games we deserve this season (again, props to Valley for overachieving in 5A, though).
Wow they should just have a committee invite the top teams and bowl games for the others. No one wants to watch all these football games anyway!

Signed,
Any of the Ridiculous, outdated college football fans

PS see how stupid the college football postseason sounds

This year's average was just under 20 -- only 4 games in single digits.

Last year's average was just under 24 -- 4 games of 35+ and only 3 single digits.
