Some interesting tidbits via Jamie Pollard from tonight’s ISU call in show:…for those who did not get a chance to listen:

  • The upcoming basketball game at Hawaii was a late substitute for a scheduled home game with Bradley (who elected not to play the game this year). Mac viewed the Hawaii road trip as a team-building opportunity. Plus we get an invite to the Rainbow Basketball tourney in two years.
  • After the basketball teams move to the new practice facility, the volleyball team will take over the west side Hilton offices. A Cyclone sports pre-game lounge for donors will be built in the other open office space.
  • Work on the east side Jack Trice improvements started today. The timeline on bowling in the south end zone depends on 1. A large donor coming forward, 2. Football wins that sell more tickets, and 3. how the economic downturn affects the athletic budget.

Thanks! Great post!

Wait--if it's expensive to the MBB team to "rent" space in Hilton, how expensive is it for the volleyball team???

Yes, we do own Hilton. And some bookkeeping trick has the basketball team "renting" the facility for practices and games--which is why we had to build a new practice facility. So it it was too expensive for basketball, how can it not be too expensive for Volleyball?

I suppose they are still stick in the ancient offices at State Gym. So I see a move up. But do the coaches really want offices somewhere besides where they're practicing?

Unless I'm mistaken there would be no financial cost for having offices at Hilton now that the AD is running Hilton as apposed to the management company. So, "renting" Hilton was not a reason for the new practice facility, it might have been when ISU wasn't managing Hilton. As far as how it shows up accounting wise for the AD I don't know but it wouldn't be a real cost. And if I'm not mistaken the volleyball team practices a fair bit in Hilton as well as other locations on campus.

They practice in Hilton whenever they can get in there. The problem is with the Men's and Women's bball teams plus the wrestling team have games and matches in there, so that leaves the volleyball team with little time in Hilton

Rumor has it the large donor will be a well known Ankeny businessman and the announcement will be made when he sells his billion dollar business (which may be tough in this economic environment).

This rumor has been going around for at least two years. And I believe the business has been sold.

You might need to win more than that after Uncle Sam and the Governor take their cuts. Unless you don't want to keep any for yourself.

A house, bills paid off, and a trust fund are enough for me. Otherwise, everyone would be constantly begging me for money. If it's already gone, they can't have it.

Oh yeah, I'd hope to get a JTS suite out of it, too.
