Not too long ago, The Atlantic had an interesting article about women in baseball. One point in particular made me smile. The original organizers didn't really want women to play, but they did want women to attend ball games to have a softening influence on the rowdy crowds.

At any rate, here we go with another first. Just please tell me her last name is not pronounced "Pay Wall".

Good for her. Nobody squawks about men coaching or reffing in women's leagues so I have no problem with women in men's leagues. If she can do the job, more power to her. Let's promote some more MiLB umps and usher out some of the perenially worst umps from the Majors.

Nfl and nba have done it for years so there's no difference. As long as she's better then angel Hernandez, laz Diaz, Phil Cuzzi, Dan Bellino, Bill Miller, Mike Estabrook... which isn't a very high bar.

I heard a story on her this morning on NPR and it is pronounced a lot like Powell.
