“We Can Be Together” is opening track from Jefferson Airplane’s “Volunteers” LP (1969), a song written by Paul Kantner.
Airplane split in the early ‘70s, morphing into Jefferson Starship, and included Kanter, Grace Slick and Marty Balin.
Jefferson Starship's initial run was 1974-84, had a revival in 1992 that continued until 2016, following Kantner’s death. His family and Slick’s approved JS to continue to tour under that name.
Starship, featuring JA/JS singer Grace Slick, but no other members from those groups, formed in '84. Slick left in 1988, to join reformed Airplane. In ’92, Starship was rebranded "Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas,” and continues.
Does your head ache yet?
For purpose of this topic, we probably don’t need to hear Airplane, original-run JS or “We Built This City,” but here’s a sample of “New” Jefferson Starship and Mickey Thomas Starship.
