While America doesn't get an entry for this contest (making it understandable), it is kind of surprising how few people in the States know what Eurovision is, considering it's been around since 1956 and is broadcast globally.

America isn't known for it's awareness of other countries, cultures, etc.

It's amazing that in some ways we're such a melting pot, but I mention my wife's family's home country and almost nobody in America can point to it on a map.

My parents know ABBA and their music very well, yet even they have never heard of Eurovision (which ABBA winning it in the 70s was their springboard to international fame.)

I bet some Celine Dion fans aren't even aware she won it performing for Switzerland.

Dang, Louane didn't make the finals?

I highly recommend her movie "La Famille Béler" where she plays the musically-talented and hearing child of a deaf couple.

Free on Plex (with subtitles).

She auto qualifies as part of France being in the Big 5. She is performing on Thursday but not competing in tbe Semis.

Eurovision also gave us (for better or worse, depending on your affinity for 90s europop music) Gina G's "Ooh Ahh (Just a Little Bit)". It's one of the very few Eurovision songs to make an impact in the United States (reaching #12 on the Hot 100 in 1997). It was the United Kingdom's entry in Eurovision. While only finishing in 8th place, it went on to become a #1 hit in the UK and top ten around the globe.

The actual performance of the song for Eurovision:

Have I got news for you...

Australia's performer this year, Go-Jo. Here's his song for 2025. Think of it like the male version of "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard"

Well, he did a cover of Ooh Ahh as part of the ALBM (ironically in this instance, means A Little Bit More) which has the performers do alternate versions of their songs. Such as acoustic, remixes, unplugged etc. They also are asked to do a cover or two. So Go-Jo's was pretty great...
